Virginia used to be a solidly Red state. Most of it still is, but Northern Virginia is now solidly Blue.

Cities are the obvious clue.. full of scum that live and breed (literally) on entitlements and it will only continue to get worse until someone figures out how to end ALL entitlements.

I would say it is now a swing state.

Voted for BHO twice.

Also voted for GWB twice.

Now a bellwether, much like OH and FL.

Why not just call it a state and drop the labels? All labels do is reinforce the divides.

I've heard it referred to as Northern Occupied Virginia.

Voting for BHO twice is what should worry us.

Washington DC (which is practically part of Virginia ) has a huge stake in keeping government BIG.

And we should note that it is one of the few major cities where JOBS are actually being created (GOVERNMENT JOBS).

The number of people who congregate in that section of Virginia closest to the capitol are INCREASING and overcoming the votes of the rest of the state.

North VA is populated by DC people that don’t want to live in the filth that their beliefs create.

“North VA is populated by DC people that don’t want to live in the filth that their beliefs create.”

Northern VA is increasingly populated by liberal Marylanders who have fled the tax-and-spend mess they created.

At the gubernatorial and U.S. Senatorial level, it’s bluish purple, but county by county, it’s mostly deep red. The GOP has conservatives firmly in control of the House of Delegates and Repubs are in control of the Senate. Our U.S. Congressional delegation is mostly GOP as well. Outside of the hives of NoVa, this state is still conservative on balance.

Northern Virginia has always been blue. The key is to run up large numbers in the states biggest city, Virginia Beach. Bush won it by 19 in 2004. Obama won it by <1 in 2008. Romney won it by 3 in 2012. Gillespie won it by 6 2 weeks ago. There are more than enough votes there to cancel out Northern Virginia. The media wants to tell us Virginia is lost for good because of Northern Virginia. Nothing has changed there including demographics. The problem is, for the last several cycles, a lot of people that used to vote republican voted democrat.

That's the problem. We would still be going red if it weren't for the cancerous outgrowth around the DC area poisoning the top of our state.

Virginia Beach is an exceptional city. Most cities our size go consistently blue. We usually always go red. Our city was also one of the only big cities in the state to vote in favor of the marriage resolution a few years ago that defined marriage as between one man one woman. I think it is partly because we are so sprawled out and suburban. Our town center has only two skyscrapers and only covers a 2 or 3 blocks. Not near as many inter-city slums and hoods as our neighbor Norfolk.

The county in southwestern Virginia which went Democrat in 2013 and 2014 is Montgomery County, which has Virginia Tech. It went narrowly for Obama in 2008 and for Bush over Kerry in 2004. I don’t know the explanation for Alleghany County, the other western county (on the WV line) that went Democrat in 2014...it has a fairly small population.

Yeah it stinks. They know how to pull strings I think and also they try to make their platform sound really non partisan during the elections to gain more support.
