The insurance company will demand a police report.

Depending on the vehicle, the owner may not have even had comprehensive insurance which would cover theft. I only carry liability/uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on my '97 vehicle. If it gets stolen, I get to go out and buy a new one out of my own pocket, but it makes no sense to have full coverage on that vehicle. The monthly premiums and deductible would be more than the vehicle is worth.
