Citrus deputy fatally shoots woman who pointed taser
Tampa Tribune ^ | 11/17/14

A Citrus County deputy is on administrative leave after officials say he fatally shot a woman who pointed a taser at him during a disturbance call in Inverness late Sunday night.

According to the Citrus County Sheriffs Office, the deputy — identified as Jacob Chenoweth — shot 46-year-old Dawn Renee Cameron following a struggle after receiving the call at 550 W. Independence Hwy., Lot 60, in Inverness.

A witness told deputies she attempted to light a truck on fire then left the scene.

Once the deputy encountered Cameron at the entrance to the park, the Citrus County Sheriffs Office said Cameron attacked him, removing the deputy’s taser and pointing it at him.

The deputy then shot Cameron, the sheriff’s office said.

Cameron was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after midnight, the sheriff’s office said.

An investigation is under way, the sheriff’s office said.

Chenoweth has been with the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office since March 8, 2010, records show, and he has no previous incidents or disciplines on file.

That is exactly what you say. From day one memorize and repeat “shoot to stop, center of mass” was drilled into me in both academies I attended.

It’s not a weapon when a cop tazers a 12 year old school girl, now it is? Seems to me the cop had no reason to fear for his life. Not a good shoot based on that. And with her looks and her age, she wasn’t in the gene pool...

So wrong on so many levels.

1) The woman was 46 not 12.

2) The woman took the police officers taser and pointed it at him not the way you have him tasering her.

3) When two people point weapons at each other, the one who pulls the trigger first generally wins. The one who talks first generally dies or is disabled enough to kill later.

4) If the cop lets the woman taser him, she can kill him soon after with his gun.

5) Hollywood shows cops talking folks out of gunpoint situations. In real life, that means dead cop or worse.

Darwin Award. Tough on the Officer, though.

When you point anything remotely weapon-like at a cop, you are risking getting shot.
Bad decision.

“So wrong on so many levels.”

It would be my guess that she didn’t point his tazer at him, and he’s just stating she did to justify the shooting. He didn’t have a drop gun, so he goes with the old drop tazer trick...

Think about it, she looks like she weighs 110 pounds. How’s she going to get his tazer? Sneak up on him from behind? If he back handed her he’d knock her down.

And no, I’m not going to give a LEO the benefit of the doubt... He’d need a body cam for me to buy it.

“The precedent is established ... if you point anything at me, I will shoot to kill you.”

A Taser is not just anything. It is a (non-lethal)debilitating weapon which can be used to disable an armed officer long enough to take his (lethal) weapon.

Mentally ill people can be very strong. they’re in an emotionally agitated state pretty much always and if they get agitated enough they get an adrenaline dump going and it’s fight night in the big city. Just a couple of years ago i had to take a schizophrenic off his meds down when he tried to stab my partner. the guy wasn’t much to look at, 5’ 10’’, medium build in his late fifties. It took 6 officers and a supervisor the better part of 10 minutes to get him in cuffs. he then started kicking us and we had to shackle his legs and put a hobble strap on him. All at 11:58 PM on Christmas eve. I’ve tried to be nice to you on this thread, but it is obvious to me that you just like to second guess cops. I know there are bad cops out there, and I know bad things do happen. But to have “cops are guilty unless proven innocent” as your default opinion is unhelpful in the extreme. Hell, criminals get “innocent until proven guilty”, couldn’t you extend the same standards to Law Enforcement?

We use to call it “Retard Strength” But you can’t say RETARD any more. Cuz the retard police get offended.

“(non-lethal)debilitating weapon”

The tazer is a potentially deadly weapon and I am steadfast against their use under most circumstances. Woe to anyone who uses one on me or mine.

We generically call it “crazy strength”. Not a lot of good memories wrapped upwith that phrase.

They’re supposed to be used in lieu of really deadly weapons (guns), but I think people get that non-lethal idea in their heads and abuse them. I think now they’re called “less lethal” in some quarters.

Fair enough. That's why all cops should wear them.
