I believe there were 2 or 3 alternatives proposed by Repubs in 2006 - 2008 and none of them got any air time.

The alternative is competition. And government keeping their hands and noses at least 10 miles away at all times.

At the time Obolacare was rammed through there were a great many alternatives to decrease health costs. Federally this included allowing Insurers to sell across state lines, allowing people to create tax sheltered HSA’s, and making medical treatment and devices tax free. At the state level it is all about tort reform.

The most difficult nut to crack is what to do about those who won’t get insurance and then can’t/won’t pay for treatment recieved. I have heard that even in the best cases hospitals still have at least a 20% no-pay rate, and in poorer areas the no pay rate can be well over 50%. That doesn’t even take into account underpayments from medicare/caide. Hospitals then must distribute the cost of treating these people to all those who do pay.

It may not be popular here on FR but if we as a society aren’t willing to tell those who can’t or won’t pay that their only option for treatment is private charity, then we invite the government into the health care business. Once that is accepted I believe the best thing to do is have clinics and hospitals run by local governments where those who can’t or won’t pay will get government standard treatmetn. Those who will pay will get to participate in the free market system. There is no way to give non-payers the same treatment as payers unless care for all goes down.

Portability
Buy across state lines

Most importantly, do not pay for illegals’ care. Do not even admit or serve them. We cannot afford legions of Duncans.

An alternative plan means that you accept the premise that the lying Democrats put forth.

And they are liars. In case you haven’t been paying attention.

Just like Gruber inferred, if you think the Republicans need to offer up an alternative Federal solution to the Democrat lie of a healthcare crisis then you are stupid.

First: Reduction of government involvement -— medical care does not require political commissars and bureaucrats and social engineers and community watch officers ... to wit: cut out the socialism.

Second: Ban government from deciding, or affecting decisions, regarding whom you wish to see for your medical care. You get to - again - pick your doctors.

Third: Several of the states -— BEFORE OBAMACARE -— already had special exchange/pools, where people who had difficulty getting health insurance, could submit an application to the insurance companies of their own choice, and each year, the submissions, let’s say to a Health Insurance Company X, would be accepted by Company X. Thus, if you had some previous health condition that kept you out in the cold, and you bothered to re-apply, you would be accepted ... IF YOU BOTHERED TO RE-APPLY. It worked.

1. Tort reform
2. Portability of coverage from employer to employer
3. Allow insurance companies to sell their coverage across state lines
4. Pre-existing illness coverage.

Do these four things and the free-market will resolve the matter in very short order.

I’m in favor of a hybrid system.

We abolish the exchanges and create a free market for those who can afford to buy their own health insurance and let affluent and middle class Americans choose a health care plan that best suits their needs.

We keep the expanded single payer Medicaid for the poor and working class by enfolding it into Medicare. That means the most vulnerable segments of our population get basic medical care at no cost.

When people move up the income ladder, they should be able to get the health care plan they want.

We can change the health care system to favor choice and also answer Democratic charges we’re abandoning the vulnerable to poor health.

The premise should be Canada’s single payer system wouldn’t work for every one here - and it works well for some but not for others. And people who can pay should take charge of taking care of their own health.

I feel a hybrid system is best suited for our country and our size and circumstances make us unique. A Republican approach should be fiscally responsible and compassionate and ensure no American will have to die for want of seeing a doctor and to cover catastrophic health care costs so its not a drain on families’ pocketbooks.

We should reject the Democratic approach that says government knows best and we should reject the approach there is a one size fits all solution to a very complex problem. Addressing health care won’t be easy but this is probably a good place to start. Any reform is going to be a messy compromise that leaves no one entirely happy but that will make sure there are more winners than losers.

Above all, no health care reform will succeed long-term on a partisan basis. We must not give in to the arrogance and hubris that drove the Democrats to ram down an unpopular health care reform down the throat of the country on a party-line vote.

This phrase is being used to set the agenda, “GOP needs an alternative [to Obamacare]”

The GOP needs to have a response, but not necessarily an alternative. It is not the governments role to provide, encourage, penalize, extort, or whatever, anything related to healthcare.

Why can’t all the people who need to be covered be put on Medicaid? Most of them are now anyway.

The GOP has proposed several market-based alternatives since the days of the Hillary-care debacle. Sound, market-based alternatives.

One was to make health insurance portable nationally, and eliminate the monopolies and oligopolies enjoyed by the several very large insurance in the individual states.

Another was tort reform, which would reduce malpractice insurance rates and frivolous lawsuits.

I would propose that individuals and small businesses get to deduct all their health care and health insurance costs, just like corporations do.

There are plenty of conservative ideas; there always have been. The problem is that our media outlets serve as the propaganda wing of a hideously evil political machine.

We can easily get to a free-market alternative and controlled costs, if we would only remove the anti-trust and anti-restraint-of-trade exemptions from the medical profession. Karl Denninger has written a great deal about this, and I'm with him on it.

The ones liking Obamacare are the ones taking the insurance for nothing.

You give a voucher for a year so they can either work or go back on welfare insurance. This prevents them from claiming they are victims. They have a choice. Socialism in healthcare does not work.

Lawsuit reform, cross state competition and so forth.
