Whenever I read this morning that he was in ‘critical’ condition, I feared the worse. Those were the same words they used to describe Duncan when he took a turn for the worse. RIP doctor. You died trying to do noble deeds. You should be honored.

Read Scott and Duncan's RETURN OF THE BLACK DEATH.

c 2005. The Bubonic plague was really (for the most part away from the coasts) a hemorrhagic virus, that never made it to Africa. There is little if any resistance in a population that has not seen the disease. Look at Smallpox in the American Indian population. So the answer is: Yes, there is a genetic influence.

He had a weeks worth of False Negatives in Africa, while be very ill.

He possibly infected hundreds of medical personnel there.

The reason for the false Negatives needs to be understood now or truly this disease has yet to achieve it’s max.

So much for rationing...

http://thepolitic.org/healthcare-economics-an-interview-with-jonathan-gruber/

November 2, 2012

The Politic: Let’s fast-forward to a time where there’s strong political will in Washington to take on additional healthcare reform. What areas would you want the next round of health reform to focus on?

(Jonathan Gruber:) There are three things that have to happen to control costs. One is we need more consumer engagement with the system. Consumers need to more information on who’s doing an effective job. Second, we need to change the way providers are paid and medical care is organized. But neither of these by themselves will fix things. The third leg of the stool is we need more comparative effectiveness research. We need to understand what works and what doesn’t, and to have the government and insurance companies stop reimbursing for stuff that doesn’t work. The three of those will ultimately have to happen simultaneously to bend the cost curve. The third is the one in which you can do the most independently but it is hardest politically because it brings up the rationing word.

The Politic: What do you think of the ways the Affordable Care Act tackles all three of these areas?

My favorite image in the graphic novel book I wrote to explain healthcare reform is one of a baby crawling and it says with cost control we’ve got to crawl before we can walk and run. The ACA moves forward on all three of these incrementally. We are beginning to build the bottom of the legs of the stools. We need to keep building but it’s a start.

Worth remembering that the Pentagon has a “crash program” to develop isolation chambers for C-130s and C-17s, which would allow up to a dozen Ebola patients to be transferred at a single time. Obama clearly has plans to bring far larger numbers of patients to this country. The C-130s could be used to bring them in from remote treatment centers to larger airports, where the C-17s would fly them to the U.S.

An alternate theory is that the isolation chambers may be used to transport infected U.S. military personnel back to the states for treatment. In any case, there are only a dozen hospital beds in facilities fully certified to handle Ebola, so a single airlift could fill that capacity.

My guess is that Obama is not worried about those minor details. Once the military airlift capability comes on line, you’ll see scores of Ebola patients in this country, at hospitals that are marginally equipped to handle them.

While my heart goes out to his loved ones, I still don’t appreciate them bringing this deadly virus to our neighborhood.

This is not at all inconsistent with Hickox’s argument. Ebola patients are not infectious until they begin to show symptoms, because the viral load in their body is very low. In this guy’s case (and others), even after he displayed symptoms, the viral load was still low enough that he initially tested negative.

His efforts to help the poor people of Sierra Leone were admirable, and he has paid for his virtue and courage with his life.

Thanks. The first defense against Ebola here is to try to stop it there and we should recognize those who put their lives in danger for the betterment of mankind.

The mean-spirited comments I read here are very discouraging. They provide fresh meat for the anti-conservatives. Conservatives believe in courage, competence, and (genuine) public service.

I wonder if there are any genetic factors that determine resistance? In the US, Duncan and this fellow were West Africans. The Americans with Ebola treated in the US all survived. One nurse (Vinson) is an AA but she was mixed race.

Dark-skinned people commonly have significant vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D aids the body's immune system in fighting off disease. It would be interesting to examine the races of the hundreds of medical personnel who have contracted Ebola in west Africa and compare the respective mortality rates of Caucasians versus Negroes. If such a study shows much higher mortality rates for Negroes, that doesn't suggest that Ebola is racist, but it certainly might lead WHO to recommend massive vitamin D supplements for anyone, white or black but most particularly the latter, if they are working in the effort to control this plague.

Exactly. Whitey America is out to kill blacks with Ebola. The whites used up all the special serum and left none for the blacks. Where’s Jesse?

FOX keeps calling him an American but he was actually a citizen of Sierra Leone, with a permanent visa to the U.S.!

I think they only tested him twice, not every day for a week. To your point, though, false negatives are too easy to come by, and more people are infected because protective measures like quarantining patients aren’t taken.

Yet Amber Vinson, who is part white (as probably all so-called African Americans are), survived and hugged Open Borders Jorge Bush.
