ABC News ^ | Nov 15, 2014 | Dan Peck

The first sightings of ice on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes overall usually occur during the beginning to middle of December. However, a perfect combination of last season's record ice coverage, cooler summer temperatures, and an early blast of arctic air this fall has allowed for areas of ice to form earlier than normal for the second year in a row.

Al Gore made billions on the climate scam, and became a national joke. I wonder if it was worth it.

It’s the second of three cold winters in a row according to the old yoopers. My view is they better hope this cold only lasts 3 years.

The cold winters I can handle. Its the cold summers that become a real problem.

With a long cold winter followed by a cold summer the lakes ice over sooner and longer which creates a snowball effect in the region.

The cold/damp summer also destroyed the tomato plants via some fungus.

Its exactly why I look at the crops that were grown in Michigan 100 years ago and plant lots of them. I still grow tomatoes but I don't count on them.

It is colder than normal Up here in the UP of MI. Last week’s snow storm dropped 28 - 46 inches of snow from Mon to Wed. Starting tonight Lake Effect snows will be going on. When Lake Superior freezes over - the Lake Effect snow dissipates. Saturday morning 13 below zero. next week highs in 20s during the daytime, nights will colder - single digits or lower.

The oddity was the temperatures went from 40s to below 32 over night, very little frost, ground was warm, heavy snow came the layer on the ground is an ice layer, now the frost is setting in and the moisture in the ground will make for havoc with roadways- buckling and so forth.

Snow removal was hideous. The snow plows did not get the slush layer that formed before the sub zero temperatures - roadways are ice covered - ice is about 1 inch thick. Idiots just put sand on it, but not to good as the ice melts and refreezes further down the roadway, where the icy patches get thicker. The ice does a number on snowblowers - broke 3 shear pins on Monday, 2 on Tuesday and 4 on Wednesday. Lake effect snow generally can be over 3 inches or more. The joys of winter in the UP. I am not complaining I love it.

Check it out... We're heading for an ice age, not global warming. Good thing the Goreites changed their brand to 'climate change'. That old global warming stuff is hard to sell when you go from 25 days above 30 to 4. And August wasn't much better.

Anything bad or unusual in the environment is scientific proof that we need to put even more power into the hands of the same old corrupt politicians.

I’m presuming the “days above 30 degrees” refers to “degrees Centigrade/Celsius”.

Those nutty Canadians. Always trying to trip us Americans up with their silly Celsius and metric system nonsense. But we like those Canucks just the same.
