Footage has emerged of Darren Wilson - the police officer who killed Michael Brown - threatening to arrest a man for filming him.
The video shows Wilson approaching a resident in Ferguson, Missouri, and demanding that he put away his camera. [snip]
The arrest was filmed in 2013, but was only posted online this week. It shows Wilson telling Mike Arman, a 30-year-old Ferguson resident, to put away his phone or be arrested.
Wilson, thinking he is being photographed rather than filmed, said: 'If you wanna take a picture of me one more time, I’m gonna lock your ass up.'
In response, Arman, identified by the Guardian, said: 'Sir, I’m not taking a picture, I’m recording this incident, sir.'
The clip cuts out after Wilson approaches, but an incident report which Wilson filled out after the event revealed that Arman was cuffed and taken to Ferguson police station.
There he was charged with failure to comply with Wilson, and also for breaching regulations on pit bull dogs. The charges were later dropped, Arman claims, when he showed police the video footage and proved his pet was not a pit bull.
The incident offers another insight into Wilson, whose behavior during the fatal confrontation with Brown is under intense scrutiny.

It looks bad in the context of this article. In the context of what seems to have actually happened, it looks fine.
Although that’s the implication of the article, Wilson doesn’t lock the guy up for taking pictures. The guy was arrested for refusing to take a summons Wilson was trying to serve (the latest of many, as Wilson notes in his report).

I read that report and based on the video, Officer Wilson filed a false report. He said he told the guy to put the camera down because it was in his face. When Wilson threatened to arrest the man for videotaping him, they were 10 feet or more apart. In the video, Wilson told the citizen he didn’t have the right to videotape him. That is false. Strangely, Wilson refused to tell the man his name and tried to defend it in the report by claiming the man could easily read it off his badge. At 10 feet away, that statement was highly dubious. Officer Wilson looks like a d*ck and a liar to me. If he lied then, can we believe anything he has said now? His job and freedom weren’t on the line when he filed this deceptive report.
You mean he was arrested for whatever reasons, but all the the charges were then subsequently dropped.
BTW, not sure what that has to do with Wilson telling the resident he did not have the right to record him.

I agree completely. In my opinion, there's always something more to a story, especially any short print story or television news story.
If I were to guess, the "more" to this includes additional elements that are, in some respect, unfavorable to both the videographer and Officer Wilson, as well as elements that are favorable to each.
We deal with that issue frequently at FR; I would guess we deal with it on a daily basis. Heaven knows I've seen articles that include only the 'facts' presented by the disgruntled parent of a student, and the attorney representing them, and nothing from the school which is being advised not to comment. However, people comment on those stories as if the 'facts' presented by one side in the dispute are the Gospel truth.
I disagree. Police have the responsibility to get people to comply to the law, and the right to arrest them when they don’t. Wilson is basically reminding Arman of that fact, Arman ignores him, Arman gets arrested. Arman was not charged with filming Wilson; he was charged with refusing the summons, and he’d evidently either refused to comply with them before.
It’s only a “threat” in the sense that police can and do arrest people, and people find that fact threatening. I don’t see any evidence here that Wilson broke any laws in arresting Arman, and I don’t see any reason to think cops shouldn’t warn people who are at risk of getting arrested before arresting them.
Police do not arrest everyone they could arrest, any more than they ticket everyone they could ticket. Quite often cops have the right to make a judgment call, and part of the judgment call is often giving the person who has done something that gives the cop the right to arrest them the opportunity to cooperate or otherwise indicate they’re interested in behaving without getting arrested.
Take that opportunity, the cop may let you go with a ticket or a verbal warning or, in this case, with just the summons. Don’t make use of that opportunity, and you’ll get arrested. This guy was offered that opportunity and ignored it.

Wilson stated the resident "Did not have the right to record him". That's not true.
In fact on the police report you yourself provided, it appears Wilson lied again, alleging the resident had the camera in his face, when in fact Wilson was 10-20 feet away when he told the resident he'd "lock his ass up if he did not stop recording him" and stated the resident "did not have the right to record him".
Get your facts straight.
Read more carefully. He doesn’t say “in his face,” he says “remove the camera from my face” — Arman was filming Wilson’s face, when Wilson says he had agreed only to a voice recording.
We also don’t have the entire conversation on video; Wilson may have been closer to Arman earlier. Wilson may also be able to read a badge at that distance, so assumes others can as well; my eldest can and is always surprised when I want her to read things like that for me.
The law of this land is “innocent until proven guilty” — Wilson may not see things the way you do, but there’s no evidence here that he lied or that he did anything wrong.
