Scientist apologizes for his sexist shirt, but the Internet still wants women to shut up and die

Matt Taylor, who's a great scientist and seems to also be a pretty cool dude, gave a teary, heartfelt apology for his choice of attire on the day of Rosetta's probe landing.

"I made a big mistake, and I offended many people," Taylor said at Friday's media briefing, his voice trembling, "and I'm very sorry about this."

With that, the briefing moved onto the science (as it should -- Philae's days are numbered, and we want to find out as much as we can from the little probe that could). Taylor seemed to have trouble speaking for a few minutes, but perked up by the end. Many praised his apology on Twitter, and whether or not he was aware of that response, it seemed to have taken a weight off his shoulders.

Because none of the people calling out Taylor's attire wanted him blacklisted from science, or punished, or to run into a corner and cry. The coolest people in the world (like the ones who land probes on comets) should also be held to the highest standards -- they're the ones that the children of the world are watching for cues.

And for young women in the world, a shirt covered in hyper-sexualized women does not send a good message, conscious or otherwise.

Inappropriate for a workplace, and for a public appearance. And generally elsewhere, IMO, but that’s his business. I’m surprised no one who who works with didn’t call him out on it first.

Not a whole lot of diversity or variation of individual style, but these guys got men to the moon and back, using mostly slide rules.

Yeah. I don’t know why people on either side of the issue are whining about what the guy wears or what tattoos he has. Its all childish hypocrisy as far as I’m concerned.

Considering his career choice, its pretty unlikely he ever thought he would be in the public eye.

If I were him I would have told feminazis and church ladies alike to kiss my ass.

"I wouldn’t mind being trapped in the planetarium with her. ..."

I don't know man, as fragile as I am that beautiful woman would probably break me. Look at the arms on her. Photoshopped or seriously into workouts.

True dat. I’ve met people who teach and understand such concepts as the Everett-Wheeler equations and quantum entanglement. But if you put them in a fully equipped kitchen and ask them to make a meal they’d starve.

Well...of course you wouldn’t find a similar shirt represented in the ‘20s or ‘30s. You wouldn’t find miniskirts, bell bottoms, shoulder pads, or leg warmers, either.

You’re right; it is seriously unprofessional, and very much like wearing pajamas to work. I think my post implied that.

But the guy isn’t being raked over the coals by women because he looked like a slob. I’d be willing to bet he could be walking on the street in that shirt, and some chick would snap a picture, post it online, and it would go viral for the same reason.

I’d buy and wear that shirt! I like women, particularly blondes. But then again I don’t give a @&$# what people think.

HR departments are the enforcers of big brother. They are evil, useless, and someday they will be abolished for the waste of money that they are.

Yes, very sexually gratuitous. and I like every one of them. Those guys were a long way from home doing a job that more likely than not would kill them in the near term. The art was simply a manifestation of them being a long way from home, lonely and scared about their future. I think it’s about time we stopped apologizing for the way we express ourselves and live our lives to liberals. This is who I am, i am not apologizing for it. Screw you liberals.

If it were me...

I would invite this cry baby to a one on one meeting under the guise of apologizing. At the meeting I would make sure all the cameras were rolling. Then, approach looking very sad, and take off the shirt, throw it in front of her, the tell her, “pick it up, wash it and iron it.”

Hmmmm...so when pursuing any future scientific endeavors; leave my classic Olivia DeBerardinis ‘Hello, Nurse’ t-shirt in the closet.
