Mark Maynard owns a used car lot, runs a towing business and spends his spare time on a professional drag racing pit crew. And despite not raising a dime for his Republican campaign, he defeated West Virginia's longest-sitting state senator.
That was the kind of election it was for West Virginia Democrats. As voters took out their disgust with President Barack Obama, Maynard defeated Sen. Truman Chafin, a lawmaker Republicans previously had bothered to challenge only once in three decades.
Not a single campaign check came Maynard's way, nor did he report spending anything. Potential donors told Maynard he didn't have the right political background, he said.
Instead, he knocked on doors and networked.
Maynard paid out of pocket for some election supplies and someone donated $350 worth of yard signs. He printed pamphlets listing his stances and hobbies: working on a fly-in pit crew for funny-car drag races; playing guitar and singing country and gospel music; and trail riding in his 1982 Chevy 4x4.
"I think it's not necessarily dissatisfaction with him," Maynard said of Chafin. "It's just dissatisfaction with the party."

Now this is my kind of candidate! I do not turn on the radio or tv much anymore, so I miss all of the disinformation and misinformation and attack ads that most of us pay for somehow.
I do not like the idea of donating money to a candidate so it can be spent on ads. Read the blogs on the internet, make up your mind and then vote. It is easy and cost effective.
I have yet to change my mind because of an attack ad or rob-call! What about you?
The Republican candidate knocked on doors and walked
the district. He won the old fashion way-he went out and worked to be elected. This is how you win elections at the local level.
With those qualifications, I'd have no trouble voting for him!
How dare the peasants run for our offices!! Our people have been indoctrinated into marxism by the school systems we control. How dare you not support your betters.

Oh, robo-calls definitely help me make up my mind. I vote AGAINST the candidate that rings my phone the most. In our GOP Congressional Primary here in Texas, in March, one dude was robo-calling me every day. I was so pissed, I voted for the other Conservative, Brian Babin. Babin won the Primary and the General Election. I HATE ROBO-CALLS.
A Chevy? That’s a deal-breaker right there.
Yeah, but that’s a pre-Obama Chevy, so those are OK.
In fact, Obama was a Kenyan, or an Indonesian national at the time, according to his own biography.

Oh My God!! An elected official that can actually do things. He may well qualify as a real CITIZEN LEGISLATOR. Actually there are many of these in our state legislation and should be emulated more at the national level.

Yeah, Michelle Nunn, of GA, could have taken lessons from this Dim. All she did was make commercials that were negative against her opponent. She made me sick!

In other words, he is a productive member of society providing useful services. More than can be said of politicians.

As a fan of David Crockett, I have to agree with you. Even when he was in congress (1827-1835), it was mostly populated by lawyers and professional politicians.
