Hey, at least Google didn't "honor" Veterans Day with a homepage featuring Jane Fonda on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. So yes, let's take some satisfaction from the fact that Google did depict actual members of the US military on its homepage this morning.
That said, Google couldn't resist inflicting its PC-politics onto the homepage, with wildly unrepresentative demographics. The image shows five military members. Standing alone out front is a woman. Of the five, three would appear to be members of minority groups, and two are women. One white guy manages to make it in.
Compare and contrast with the military's actual demographics. As of 2012, as per this official report, women comprised only 14% of active-duty military, and minority members 30%. So Google doubled minority representation, and more than doubled the proportion of women.

Yup. In lots of advertising, white guys are always the stupidest and/or most icky, ones in the room. Some of us take notes and avoid companies who field those ads.
But I don't understand why advertisers and studios feel they need to be over represented. Whats the goal?
Most folks in the ad industry are liberals, period - so the only goal is to show how enlightened and unracist they are. The customers take their advice. It's really obvious.
Especially if they are a white husband or a white dad - they’re always to dumbest character.
Not to me its not. They are ignoring key advertising principles to show how enlightened they personally are?
Sorry, let me clarify:
What I meant was obvious was what these advertisers are doing - it is blatant and so easy to spot. In fact, it’s impossible NOT to notice.
They routinely ignore important traditional holidays.
Of all the things to whine about, this? Really?
Yes it is. My non white wife noticed it long ago.
Total slut!
“The image shows five military members. Standing alone out front is a woman. Of the five, three would appear to be members of minority groups, and two are women. One white guy manages to make it in. “
That’s because everyone else were too busy fighting/training to have time to pose for pics
Where’s the white guy? I see two blacks, a woman, a Latino and a Chinese guy. Or is this like school where Asians are counted as white?
If he is not gay, he is a villain. :)
Really? They finally do something for Veterans Day and now folks are whining about the demographics of the picture? Some folks really are addicted to complaining, and those folks really need to STFU because they’re stupid and embarrass the world around them.
The goal is to appeal to as many people as possible. If you’ve only got 3 people in your commercial you want them to tag on as many demos as possible. It doesn’t matter if the ratio has any resemblance to the real world, it matter how many groups you tag.
I don’t notice, because I don’t care. I think race counting identity politics is a sad pathetic hobby. Really get over it. So there aren’t a bunch of white people in commercials, who cares. Does that really make our plight worse? Doesn’t effect me at all, and once you stop obsessing on stupid things that don’t matter it won’t effect you either.
Can you imagine the conversation that went into designing this logo?
the general idea,
the requirement to include all branches,
the requirement to include all “races”,
and then, to top it off, a woman as the “leader”,
because showing a male as leader would be sexist.
I suppose we could just ignore it.
