When I was a ‘mere’ enlisted type back in the 50/60’s the first thing we were told was to obey the local laws and customs, be respectful of the people we dealt with and in 1957 on first trip to Japan, we were told to NOT eat any home grown food - guess they figured our systems couldn’t handle the local cuisine as the Japanese were using human waste for fertilizer.
Well, being well adjusted 17 yos, we quickly discovered enough booze would override that particular ‘speed bump’ and as an act of kindness, we tried to spend our meager savings to boost up the economy and tried to make friends with as many local females as humanly possible.
Probably was making something in the neighborhood of $70-80 per month - which was really walking around money and the going rate of 360 yen = 1 USD meant going on Liberty with 10 bucks made you somewhat ‘rich’.
And to be accommodating, most of the people that us ‘youngsters’ ran into spoke enough English to be able to convince us to help their economy out.
I thought they were ‘gracious hosts/hostesses’ seeing as we had attempted to erase them from the face of the earth some 10+ years earlier (Why we did it is understood, I just thought the people I ‘had’ to deal with were friendly).
Of course we all realized their job was to relieve us of our money and ours was to part with it.
Worked well.....

Chris Plante (WMAL AM630/FM 105.9) WashDC pointed out today that when he first met he was wearing that ‘ridiculous’ shirt/coat/jacket and the Chinese were in business suits but they ‘sort of’ peeled off and came back with a similar type outfit.
The way he was ‘explaining’ it was the custom at these meetings would be to dress in local Mufti for the meetings, not get off the plane looking like an asshole.
OF COURSE, IMNSHO BO could be wearing a diaper or 100,000 dollar tux and he still would look like an asshole.
