The apology follows the dated term found in updated Army regulations policy as an acceptable classification for 'a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.' The newly revised policy now limits the acceptable terms to 'Black or African American.'
The U.S. Army has backtracked with an apology after approving the term "Negro" as an acceptable reference for black service members.
The decision comes two days after the dated term was found listed as an acceptable classification for "a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa" in section 6-2 of the Army's AR 600-20 regulations.
The revised policy now limits the acceptable terms to "Black or African American."
"The U.S. Army fully recognized, and promptly acted, to remove outdated language in Army Regulation 600-20 as soon as it was brought to our attention," Army spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Alayne Conway said in a statement.
"We apologize to anyone we offended," she said.
According to Defense Power Research about 21% of active-duty members of the Army are black.

The term "African American" makes no sense. Africa is a place (and so is America) and is not a race. They don't have a place to check for "Irish American" or "Polish American", so why "African American"?

There was a stream near the town of Leavenworth, WA called “Nigger Creek”. I still have a road map old enough to show it. Turns out it was officially renamed “Negro Creek” some years back. I suppose it’s time to think about re-renaming it. That’s the sort of thing our our state legislature can handle. They aren’t good for much else.
Hear hear! Maybe one day these ethnic/racial categories will be dropped altogether. Of course, then the US govt will just think of other categories to use to keep us all divided.
In the meantime, since they’re counting, notice that the article states 21% of active-duty Army members are black. That’s 21% from a group that makes up only 12% of the population. I admit I’ve never heard that statistic before.

I think they should get rid of using the African part.
We all are suppose to have allegiance to America. If not,

Well, I'm one of those 'Negros' folks are discussing, and I personally prefer the term, 'black'.
If Caucasoid people are going to be called 'white', it only makes sense to call Negroid people 'black'.
I'm perfectly comfortable with it.
I'd ask the same question of America as a whole. Remember 'the Great Melting Pot', and E Pluribus Unum?
I was taught those concepts from early childhood, and still subscribe to them.
Now it's a "tossed salad".
