SIERRA VISTA — The 20th Annual Veterans Parade in the city will be held Tuesday — Veterans Day — said Laura Killberg, special events supervisor for the community’s Parks and Leisure Services.

There are 55 entries in the parade and the event begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, she said.

Since Wednesday Killberg and others have been putting the finishing touches on the parade to include the lineup of the participants.

The entries will be broken down into three sections with the first being veterans’ organizations — 17 of them — led off by the Buena High School Marching Colts, she said Friday.

The middle section will be community groups and the last will be active duty military led by the Fort Huachuca 62nd Army Band, Killberg said.

The musical groups in the parade include Col. Smith Middle School on the fort, Joyce Clark Middle School in Sierra Vista, Palominas School, the Sierra Vista Community Band and Veritas Percussion, she said.

The grand marshal is retired Air Force Col. Bob Strain, who is also a former Sierra Vista mayor. Strain was also named the Greater Sierra Vista United Veterans Council Veteran of the Year.

At the conclusion of the parade in Sierra Vista Veterans’ Memorial Park, Maj Gen. Robert P. Ashley Jr., commander of the Intelligence Center of Excellence and the fort, will speak at the event full of military symbolism, she said.

The post’s salute battery will fire a 21-cannon honor, the fort band will play the National Anthem and a medley of service songs and Taps will be sounded, Killberg said.

Parade route

The parade route will go down Fry Boulevard starting at Seventh Street and ending at Sierra Vista Veterans’ Memorial Park.

Wilcox Avenue from Seventh Street east to Lenzner Avenue will be closed to traffic on the westbound lanes from 7:30 a.m.

Traffic on Lenzner Avenue and Seventh Street be restricted and then closed to traffic at 8:45 a.m.

During the parade Fry Boulevard will be closed to traffic all the way to Avenida Esquela until the parade ends, which is expected to be around 10:30 a.m.
