The South: Solid Once Again _ For Republicans

ATLANTA (AP) -- With the walloping Republicans gave Democrats in the midterm elections, the GOP stands one Louisiana Senate runoff away from completely controlling Southern politics from the Carolinas to Texas. Only a handful of Democrats hold statewide office in the rest of the Old Confederacy.

The results put Southern Republicans at the forefront in Washington - from Senate Majority Leader-in-waiting Mitch McConnell of Kentucky to a host of new committee chairmen. Those leaders and the rank-and-file behind them will set the Capitol Hill agenda and continue molding the GOP's identity heading into 2016.

In statehouses, consolidated Republican power affords the opportunity to advance conservative causes from charter schools and private school vouchers to expanding the tax breaks and incentive programs that define Republican economic policy. The outcome also assures that much of the South, at least for now, will remain steadfast in its refusal to participate in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

"I think these new leaders can help drive the conservative movement" at all levels, said Louisiana Republican Party Chairman Roger Villere, echoing the celebrations of Republican leaders and activists across the region. "We just want a government that doesn't suppress people."

Does anyone else see this as a prelude to civil war? I recall a similar ideological and geographical divide occurring around 1850 or so, with a particularly bloody conclusion.

I bet the exodus from NY, CA, and NJ that began a decade ago will now accelerate.

Saw a NY Times article that says that there are very few White Democrats in the Texas legislature.

While the Liberals at pointing fingers at the Republicans and saying they don't have enough minorities in their party, Whites are quietly slipping out the back door of the Democrat party and either becoming Republicans, or declaring themselves "Independent."

I figured if it hadn’t happened the odds would be higher.

Sad to see that Virginia is no longer a southern state thanks to the influx of liberals around DC.

The south is armed. The north isn’t. Different than CW1.

It makes me heartsick. I never thought I would see my state sink so low...and that includes the corrupt, grinning joke we have for a "governor."

There are 7 white Democrats in elected state offices in Texas out of 63 democrats in office. There are 181 elected legislative offices in Texas.

So Texas has changed from an all-white Democrat legislature to a mixed Legislature.

Most whites left the democrat party.

Or we can say that the democrat party left most whites behind, in a race to the bottom of identity politics.

Lots of white Democrats still left in Florida. We still have a Dem senator and Charlie Crist was close to beating Rick Scott for the governorship.

Not all the Dem House members are in South Florida. One just won the District 2 seat.

It’s going to be interesting to see what Committee Ted Cruz gets to chair. I know McConnell would like to give him Chairmanship of the “Oversight Committee on Nursing Homes for the Aged in Adult Diapers”. But, I don’t think he could get away with that one. I think he’d be excellent chairing the Judicial Committee; he is highly qualified for that Post. Any other FReepers got any suggestions?

Well, I received an e-mail today from the "Black Conservatives Fund"asking for donations to help defeat Mary Landrieu in the Black Communities, going door-to-door in Baton Rouge, LA. I didn't even know that there was a "Black Conservatives Fund".
