Video: What happens when a reporter tries to out-squat a squatter in Detroit?

Here’s Detroit reporter Charlie LeDuff, a truly great writer and character, giving a Detroit squatter a taste of her (his? It’s somewhat in question.) own medicine. A homeowner had allegedly been attacked by the squatter while trying to sell the property, so LeDuff paid a visit:

Detroit homeowner Sarah Hamilton wanted to sell her house, but was having some trouble.

No, it wasn’t a down seller’s market — it was a squatter.

Hamilton had a difficult battle: In the process of trying to get Lynn Williams out her house, WJBK-TV reported Hamilton was threatened with a knife. But things got more interesting after WJBK reporter Charlie LeDuff entered the picture. He met with the homeowner and her attorney, and was given a set of keys and the proper paperwork.

Then, after informing the police of his intentions, LeDuff donned a white bathrobe and walked right up to the front door to have a chat with Williams.

Of course, cameras were there to capture the pair’s conversation.

Enjoy.

Either very well planned or just lucky. Most likely a squatter will be dangerous - too dangerous to be evicted this easily.

LeDuff has always been a thorn in the side of the Detroit city council.

I’m glad Detroit’s “squatter’s rights” law was repealed. I can’t see why it was enacted in the first place.

That’s why he had a cop with him.

If that were my house the problem would be solved after the first warning to the squatter.......no cops, no lawyers and no reporters needed.

Followed by SSS: Shoot, Shovel, Shut up.
These people are thieves and trespassers on private property. After one warning all bets are off especially if they initiate threats or violence.

I don’t think I would give them any type of warning. Legally it might acknowledge something I don’t want to be on record acknowledging. First step, and without calling any cops, is that I would gain entry, breaking in if I had to, maybe when the squatters were out of the house, maybe not. I can hardly be prosecuted for breaking into my own house. At that point I am in my own house and the Castle doctrine allows me to shoot intruders (the squatters). I would try to march them out at gunpoint, immediately, but I would shoot if necessary. As long as my claim of ownership is upheld, then I don’t think I can be charged with anything, even if I have to shoot them.

Why would anyone squat in a city where you can literally buy a house for a buck?

Well, if you buy the house, you’ll have to pay taxes. I guess you can ignore tax bills if you are squatting...

Charlie has some liberal leanings but he’s really even handed.

In this segment he ends with the suggestion that Harry Reid is a big rather than small asshole.

‘Destruction’ is hard to win against. Taking possession of the house was the easy part. Now to keep the former occupant and those sympathetic out and away...For example, a rock thrown from the sidewalk is really easy, and life could be intolerable there...

I have a small hole in my garage door window, looks like a pellet gun. I live in a good neighborhood, but there is 1 family I wouldn’t mind seeing move away. I have no proof that it was their kids, but I am pretty confident it was them.
