Yeah, that picture is fascinating and tantalizing. I went nuts playing with the descent imagery, but used low tech :-) I was trying to pinpoint the landing spot, and IIRC, the put out some initial announcements that were kind of off. Note the ground image was a single fixed view. They did send back multiple images, but I don't recall the parachute thing. I didn't think they got the ground image that quick.
