The commander of US Navy SEALs has issued a stinging rebuke to troops who have broken the elite force's hallowed tradition of secrecy and humility by publishing memoirs and speaking to the media.
Days after the Fox News network announced it would broadcast a documentary with a commando who claims to have shot Osama bin Laden, Rear Admiral Brian Losey, the head of Naval Special Warfare Command, wrote to his troops denouncing anyone who seeks fame or fortune by revealing details of secret missions.
"A critical tenet of our Ethos is 'I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions,'" Losey and the top enlisted sailor, Force Master Chief Michael Magaraci, wrote in the letter, obtained by AFP on Monday.

And I would say to SEALS and others from Maine, Serve the US Military and you are serving the UN. Join your local militia and you are serving first your family, then your county, then your state and finally your country.

Let us not tacitly confirm that seeking after financial gain is somehow dishonorable, cowardly contrary to service or sacrifice. If we are capitalists we believe that seeking after personal financial gain works for the common good. Yes the seeking after gain should be within the law but the law has to do with the morality of the act itself not superimposed over the activity as though it were the sin of usury.
Finally, let us acknowledge that the fish rots from the head down and the administration has exploited the deeds of the Navy SEALs for its own political gain and rendered any self-righteous criticism to be the rankest kind of hypocrisy.
The point is whether the revelations betray secrets and compromise future missions, not whether the anti-capitalist notions of some individuals should be honored.
How many generals have cashed in on their books? As long as these Seals don’t divulge classified info, they should be free to write their books.
