Earlier this week, the Met Office invited us to celebrate the fact that we had allowed to be siphoned from our pockets the £97 million it allegedly needed to build a new super-computer to "produce the most scientifically accurate short-term forecast that are scientifically possible."
(snip)
The mighty Booker's reservations can be summed up in one phrase: Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Which is to say that you can have the spiffiest, most bells-and-whistles super-computer in the world, but it'll still only be as good as the data you feed into it - and, of course, only as good as the algorithms it uses to make its projections.
On both scores, the Met Office will continue to fail dismally so long as it remains in the grip of a Warmist cabal which, in defiance of all real-world evidence, is ideologically committed to the bankrupt theory that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are the most significant driver of "climate change."

For example, this post from yesterday asserts the IPCC is pushing 'ceasing use of fossil fuels by 2100'

With all this energy & resources (tax dollars...OUR money) being expended behind the scenes, with a parallel assault on the original mission of NASA on this side of the pond to make it more 'world-oriented & furthering the goals of the climate change alarmists'...
...one wonders what all these very-public distractions might be taking our attention away from...
The MSM is forced to tout headlines like, "Forecasters hit the mark on 2014 Atlantic hurricane season"...after severely downgrading their prior forecasts for stormier, warmer oceans.

Months ago, they were touting the rising of ocean temperatures as evidence of AGW...now it's "Oops...it's El Nino"
Even NASA has gone silent after a June headline, "Hurricane season is coming! Nasa reveals oceans are approaching peak temperature to trigger extreme winds"
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2649959/Hurricane-season-coming-Nasa-reveals-oceans-warming-summer-weather-patterns-begin.html
If even a normal earth event (El Nino) can't trigger the violent storms predicted by the global warming alarmists (Gore, IPCC et al), the idiom "garbage-in/garbage out" equates more with 'Ponzi Scheme'.
With so many assaults on our system on a near weekly basis, how can lowly American Conservatives make a difference in such government-created chaos?
Oh, yeah...vote & change the government. (for one)
(I do not, however, apologize for my tagline)
Problem is, they're AlGorisms.
What is a "Met Office" ?
Having just returned from 4 weeks in the UK, I can say that their short term forecasts are not really that good.
In their eyes, the money is well spent to boost the Met Office’s daily accuracy to make their long term AGW dire predictions look more reasonable.
British version of NOAA.
At least they are buying American....

If the science is settled, they don’t need a new supercomputer.
Thank you. I was wondering why an opera company needed a supercomputer!
Within 5 minutes of turning on this computer government sponges will be surfing porn.
The UK is very difficult place to forecast the weather. It is not like say southern California where a guess of sunny weather is almost always true. I doubt the supercomputer will enhance forecast accuracy.
Nice! I missed that!
Beyond weather forecasting, the new supercomputer will also assist with climate change predictions. These simulations try to predict weather patterns years, decades and centuries in advance. The only way to do that at the moment is to reduce the resolution of the simulation. The new super computer will allow better resolution in the climate predictions. Researchers will also be able to program more complex science into their simulations and test if they more accurately reflect the data.
