A Liberian woman who recently arrived in Portland and was monitoring herself for Ebola symptoms under a voluntary program was whisked to the hospital at mid-day Friday with a high temperature.

She was taken to Providence Milwaukie Hospital, where she is in isolation and being tested for the disease, which is highly infectious and has killed thousands of people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

"We had hoped this wouldn't happen," said Dave Underriner, regional chief executive for Providence Health & Services. "We've done a lot of work to prepare for an Ebola case."

right now, the level of hysteria is ridiculous

No, it isn't. Not containing a pandemic disease to the location where it is seems to be insanity. If these people want to work there (I don't regard them as heroes) let them sign contracts of at least one year and have a paid 21-day quarantine upon returning as part of their contract.

Many of us don't trust our government anymore. We don't trust the RINO elitist DC crowd to stand firm and make things right. I'm among those who suspects that we just may not be told about Ebola cases and even deaths until after the election. I really don't like the arrogance of those who are so sure they won't spread the disease, but can't explain why it's now spreading to supposedly protected health care workers. We wonder if there's a critical tipping point where the incidence of Ebola becomes impossible to contain.

What about if someone comes back from west Africa, and contacts influenza and dies from that? Would anyone believe the gov if they said it was flu, not Ebola? From then on, every bad flu case in that area would be feared to be Ebola, and then you'd see uncontrollable panic. Besides that, I don't see "not as bad as the flu" as a defense. We should be working to minimize flu, not adding another disease or two to the mix.

Are you defending the self-centered sociopath in Maine?

Holy Crapatola, All three hotsots? Who is she?

Officials have released very little information about the woman, other than to say she had recently been in Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone and was staying in Portland. She was taken to a hospital in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie.

This woman is far more likely to have malaria than Ebola; malaria kills a million people per year.

Yeah he is stable but critical...

The thought is heavy droplet transmission is treatable by common care and antibiotic and blood transfusion interventions.

Duncan showed the same onset as Ebowla and Duncan was direct bodily fluid contact.

Same result? I would think yes.

The important thing, to me, is not so much the number of deaths, but the death RATE. Ebola is estimated to be killing about 70 percent of its victims in this outbreak (although the U.S. record, so far, is much better). Flu kills at nowhere near that rate. Admittedly, I don't know the death rate for malaria.

Furthermore, Ebola can turn your insides into soup, put you in agony, cause you to bleed out (though not always), and turn your skin into wet tissue paper. It is understandable that people are taking the "abundance of caution" route regarding potential cases.

Based on government data.

Interesting how certain people were "disappeared" early on...

Is there a bigger terrorist than the fark-head we have in the White Hut????

He is deliberately bombing this country with POS African Ebola-ridden WMD. By willfully importing human WMDs, he is terrorizing and risking the lives of the American people not to mention causing chaos at our hospitals, etc.

Staggers the imagination.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,

And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins

When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,

As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Officials have released very little information about the woman, other than to say she had recently been in Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone and was staying in Portland.

Because it turns out she's been on public transportation in the last few days or even galavanting around town (bowling alleys and the like), there'll be a panic - more people to track and more businesses to be shut down for decontamination. The bowling alley in NYC just opened up again a day or two ago. I hope the owners had insurance which covered their losses and costs.

She needs to follow the example of the medical "professionals" returning from Ebola hot zones.

Tell her to take a bus and go eat at a restuarant. She can go bowling after dinner. Maybe she can join a certain "nurse" for a bike ride.

If anybody around her is asked/ordered to quarantine themselves, they can just hire an attorney and get right back out in public.(/s)

(Prayers that she doesn't have this horrible disease, or that she recovers quickly if she does.)
