BREAKING: Judge eases some restrictions on Maine nurse being monitored for Ebola
Press Herald ^ | 10/31/2014 | David Hench

A judge issued a new ruling Friday that removes some of the restrictions placed on Kaci Hickox, the nurse who the state has been trying to quarantine since she returned to Maine earlier this week.

David Soley, a partner in the Maine law firm Bernstein Shur, which is representing Hickox, said that the judge issued a moving oral decision that sets conditions for Hickox that she has intended to follow all along.

The new restrictions call for direct active monitoring of her condition, coordination of travel with public officials and a requirement that the state be alerted as soon as Hickox develops symptoms, Soley said. It does not prevent her from leaving her house or being in contact with other people.

The new rules will be in place until a full hearing on the state’s petition, which is scheduled for Tuesday – Election Day.

“The judge issued a very beautiful and moving order in the case. I listened with tears in my eyes,” Soley said.

“He said basically we wouldn’t be here today but for a woman who cared for and comforted people who are stricken with a terrible disease,” Soley said, referring to Chief District Court Judge Charles LaVerdiere’s oral decision. “He was aware of misconceptions and bad science being spread from shore to shore.”

“The judge said people are taking actions out of fear that is not rational and inappropriate,” Soley said.

I wonder how close she is getting to her BF at this time.

If you were her BF, under these circumstances, would you keep your distance for now????

“It looks like she was nothing more than a set up like Sandra Fluke and its pretty unlikely she had any contact with Ebola patients in Africa.”

Ya know what, that has crossed my mind, it would be just like obama to do something like that but how would you know?

“Yeah, she is free to infect as many people as possible unless she restricts herself.”

What disease will she infect people with?

She’s an administrative type and is unlikely to have had any contact with patients. She comes back here and immediately starts causing trouble in 2 states with GOP governors yet doesn’t live in either state.

I don't know. What disease causes symptoms including fear, panic, paranoia, and a sudden urge to ignore medical evidence and support heavy-handed government policies?

-and you know what Judge? My brother may not be here today if I wasn’t quarantined when I was 5 with scarlet fever and strep and encephalitis. My mom had just given birth to my brother and I got sick while she was in the hospital. I don’t remember much, but my mom told me she couldn’t come home with my new brother and no one could visit or leave the house (except the dr)-this was in the early 60s when drs actually made house calls-and there was a piece of paper stuck on the door and on the doorbell-I always imagined it to be a big ‘Q’-telling the world the house was under quarantine...”it was hard”, my mom said, “but that’s life!”
Sometimes I think it was a vacation for her- because my dad was suddenly stuck at home with 3 little kids!

But if my mom had just decided she wanted to be at home no matter what-and taken my newborn brother home-he may not be here today.

So suppose we do have an outbreak of some kind-are we now going to have to take every single person to court when trying to institute a quarantine? Ebola Lawyers-the new specialty!

I thought the same thing. She has never taken care of one of the Ebola people that could be the reason she is so sure she doesn’t have it..

This is a absolute bizarre.

We have a Vast Majority of Conservatives who because of the Ebola Scare want to give the Executive Branch, that would be President Obama, the power to quarantine American citizens, without using Due Process, and without scientific evidence.

It is no only bizarre, if is freighting.

...and are upset that Obama is not seizing the power to enact such a quarantine.

Not necessarily the executive branch although they should be limiting travel, but for sure states should have the option.

Take that up with the Maine legislature. Maine law requires a court order to institute a mandatory quarantine.
