Apple CEO Cook comes out: 'I'm proud to be gay'

Apple CEO Tim Cook came out Thursday, announcing that he is gay in a column in Bloomberg Businessweek.

"Let me be clear: I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me," he wrote.

Cook has not publicly discussed his sexual preferences before now, despite some rumors and speculation that he is gay.

A year ago he announced support for a federal law which would have protected workers from facing discrimination based on their sexual orientation.

"For too long, too many people have had to hide that part of their identity in the workplace," he wrote at the time.

Given that this announcement is to cultivate future victims, cook has put him self out in public and the purveyor of cool. His proclamation of sexual deviancy as an asset for being able to run apple makes his fetish mating habits the issue.

In short he is putting apple as the “gay phone”. (there is now an app for that)

If the issue had been debated objectively in the public square, so that it was common, research-based knowledge that people are not born homosexual, then a PR campaign proclaiming "God made me this way, so it's bigotry for you to object" simply wouldn't get a lot of footing.

Nonsense. Do you think for one minute if "research-based knowledge" demonstrated homosexual behavior is a choice homosexuals would admit degeneracy or their own intransigence?

They didn't even want to close the bathhouses when public health was at risk.

As for "getting a footing," I suggest you research the power and methods of advertising before making such misguided pronouncements. Everything from "blood libels" to "Islamophobia" disproves you assertion.

The reason the movement has made so much progress is that the only counter-arguments one hears in the public arena are those based on moral/religious objections...

Again, nonsense. There are a myriad of reasons, from public health to gender balkanization, for opposing homosexual acceptance. Almost all of them are systematically scrubbed from view of those not involved in the practice by those who are, and those same activists debate only the moral/religious objections precisely because the public considers them ambiguous. Anything else gets shouted down.

The problem is not the lack of a fair and reasoned debate. The problem is a fair and reasoned debate is not in the interests of homosexual activists, and because of their commitment to their choices they use any and every resource in their possession to skew the debate onto subjective grounds.

Wow, you must really enjoy debating straw men, because you keep slapping down arguments I haven’t made.

In the first place, I never said that the homosexuals themselves would be convinced by a rational public debate. There’s a reason that the term “denial” exists. Yet somehow topics like eating disorders, alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse have been accepted as negatives despite the denials people suffering from them tend to engage in. I was referring to those neutral parties who, like as not, would have even had a cultural predisposition against homosexuality (as most cultures historically have), however slight.

And don’t presume me to be naive about the power and methods of advertising. I know full well their power and how they have, indeed, negatively impacted the culture. Your references to blood libels and Islamophobia don’t even come close to disproving my point. Blood libel is something ingrained in the Muslim culture against the Jews, and it is precisely because Islam is another topic on which we haven’t been able to have an objective, public debate that the tag exists, although far less effectively (so far) than “homophobia.”

Your argument about the power of homosexuals to shout down opposing views and stifle public debate is accurate, but my entire point is that we long ago missed the opportunity to have the debate, at a time when they weren’t so powerful. I wasn’t talking about the last election cycle. For too long, we were complacent, and content to simply dismiss it as sin and/or perversion, confident that it would never be more than an aberration to be conveniently ignored. Now we’re paying the price for that naivete.

And maybe your friends and family are wired differently, but I have members of those circles in my life who are sympathetic to the gay marriage arguments, and gay rights in general, solely because they’ve never been exposed to any reasoned, informed, secular counter-arguments. Had those arguments been made and mainstreamed such as those for other forms of addiction have been, there’s every likelihood that we would not have our backs against the cultural wall on this issue right now. For you to reject that out of hand flies in the face of reason.

Now, if you want to use my words as the basis to create any more straw men, have at it. But you’ll have to argue with yourself. I’m done.

I couldn’t help wondering about Steve Jobs himself. Handsome, wild & crazy, growing up in San Francisco. There was a lot of speculation as to whether he was HIV positive and his type of cancer really AIDS. (It apparently is prevalent among those with compromised immune systems.)

My guess? Jobs may have at least dabbled in homosexuality in his younger days. He later tried to emphasize how much he had matured and how much of a family man he had become — wife, kids. Maybe he knew there would some day be talk & he wanted Walter Isaacson to come up with a flattering biography while he was still alive & had control.

So we’re supposed to accept that shooting your seed all over another man’s stools is something to be proud of.

What you say is more true with men than with women. Especially young women. Cultural forces are impacting behavioral choices, and they’re not extremely rare exceptions anymore. I’m seeing it firsthand, and it should alarm every parent.

That’s true. It’s generally easier to identify mistreatment at the hands of men as a trigger for women, whereas with men the triggers tend to be earlier and the response far more deeply imbedded.

So what's the next cultural non-issue we should know to debate because our complacency in thinking it's a settled matter will cause it's adherents to roar into action?

This is the entire basis of your thesis.

All the rest is pretext and compromise.

Maybe Mr Cook (sp?) should change the company name
from Apple to Anal. Then all of the gays could swell with
pride.
