Pushing to confront Ebola at its West African source, President Barack Obama said Wednesday the United States was not immune to the disease but cautioned against discouraging American health care workers with restrictive measures that confine them upon their return from the afflicted region. "We can't hermetically seal ourselves off," he declared.
Obama said doctors and nurses from the United States who have volunteered to fight Ebola in West Africa are American heroes who must be treated with dignity and respect.
His remarks came amid debate between the federal government and several states over how returning health care workers should be monitored. The White House has pushed back against overly restrictive measures, including proposals for travel bans or isolation measures adopted by some states.
"Yes, we are likely to see a possible case elsewhere outside of these countries, and that's true whether or not we adopt a travel ban, whether or not you adopt a quarantine," Obama said from the White House, surrounded by health care workers who have volunteered or will volunteer to serve in Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea, where the disease has killed nearly 5,000.
"We have to keep in mind that if we're discouraging our health care workers, who are prepared to make these sacrifices, from traveling to these places in need, then we're not doing our job in terms of looking after our own public health and safety," he added.

Never let a crisis go to waste. In fact create one when you can.
Don’t do what worked for every other highly contagious, deadly disease. If you do that for Ebola, then after Congress votes for billions to fund the effort against it, it might just be contained and sent packing. And THEN WHAT WILL WE DO WITH ALL THE MONEY?! (working on it, but even so...)

Just because they are heroes doesn’t mean they should be allowed to put other people at risk. A true hero wouldn’t want to.
Quarantines give them a needed vacation while keeping other people safe. Government required quarentines are likely to cause employers to provide pay for the quarantine period. So that makes for a nice reward for our heroes.
I truly hate this sorry SOB.
It’s really based on opposites. Those are trustworthy if the one disagrees.
The decision about quarantining the troops is partly based on the fact that they were ordered to go there. How is that “based on science”? It seems to be based on legal risk.
If it makes sense to quarantine the troops (and it does) because they could get ebola and sue, then it makes sense to quarantine everyone before they come in, because they could get ebola.

Obama wants to polarize this into extremes, and will overlook logic to do it. Look at his comments that quarantine efforts are not scientific. Really? Seems to meet all the criteria. Not to mention its proven historical success.
It is perfectly scientific to separate carriers and potential carriers from being able to spread the disease. That is the entire point the traditional suggestion for the sick to stay home. Don’t go to work, don’t go to school, don’t spread the fun.
Obama knows he is on the wrong side of this argument, and thus just spouts off stuff like this and uses the bully pulpit of his office to give it ‘value’.
I just don’t get why he is so hot to let this thing in. What? He wants to rule over the last two or three people in this country that survive a plague?
Obama’s doing the ‘straw man’ argument... he’s such a jerk.
Obama is a psychopomp. Truly.
As far as his Czar is concerned, his job is to ensure that America is infected with Ebola. Thats why he is scarce. Ebola czar is making plans on how to get ebola to grow exponentially in every red state he can.

Here’s the deal: We already have a North American Union - it’s called the USA.
If additional areas want to join our Union there is a process, and they are welcome to use it and we will decide whether to accept them as a new state.
Anything else - forget about it!
