I’m scheduled to fly to Dubai and then from Dubai on to East Africa early next month. If I’m not back on FR by the end of next month you can all assume I’ve been shot down by ISIS.

I am always surprised how Congress Critters (and voters at times) will get absolutely irate over the actions of rabid/quasi-rabid/unfriendly states like Russia, China, Syria, Iran and North Korea; YET keep totally silent regarding the activities of 'friendly' states like Qatar, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The likes of Russia or China or Iran will not give a darn what Congress thinks or voters feel, and the pressure required to make them act in a more acceptable manner would be tremendous. Yet, people still strive hard to try to force (using force, guile or diplomacy) positive change - and that's a good thing.

Yet, when it comes to allies like Qatar or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia, who have killed more Americans indirectly over the past decade than the likes of North Korea by funding the various Jihadi groups GLOBAL, the West is strangely quiet. Yet, these are nations that the West can influence. The West will never make Pyongyang get rid of 'Lil Kim,' the West will never make Putin leave Crimea easily, the West will never make China stop bullying neighboring nations ....but it still strives towards that. Yet, even though the West could exert pressure on the likes of little Qatar ....goodness, all it would take is telling them no World Cup hosting for you ....it does not.

Tells you how serious the powers that be are towards issues.

These wacko muzzies have captured hundreds of shoulder fired missiles from Lybia to Syria to Iraq.

We will be damn lucky if none of them show up in our airspace.

Gotta tell ya, I got a bad feeling.

They may also make greater use of AC-130 gunships, a lumbering, propeller-driven plane bristling with cannons that circles at altitudes at the outer limits of some shoulder-fired missiles.

According to Wikipedia, the AC-130 "lumbers along" at 300 mph.

Here’s the good news: the U.S. military has extensive, detailed knowledge of all the MANPADs we’re likely to encounter in Iraq and Syria, including the SA-24. The countermeasures systems on our aircraft are routinely updated to provide optimum protection—one reason the jihadis have had more luck with RPGs hitting choppers that are hovering, rather than MANPADS, which are designed to engage moving targets. It also helps that most of our bombing runs, using PGMs, are conducted at the upper edge or above the MANPAD envelope.

The bad news: not a single U.S. airliner has any protection against any type of shoulder-fired SAM. The Israelis took that step after a charter 757 was engaged on a flight out of Kenya several years ago. The cost of a self-defense system would add about $3 to the cost of a round-trip, coast-to-coast ticket, but the feds (and the airlines) see no need to add that capability—until the first terrorist knocks down an airliner with a MANPAD and kills hundreds of passengers and the crews.
