The last US Marines unit and final British combat troops in Afghanistan have officially ended their operations by transferring two crucial military bases to the Afghan military.
The American and British flags were lowered and folded up for the final time at the regional headquarters of the international military at Camp Leatherneck in southern Afghanistan.
US Marines, British and Afghan soldiers formed a guard of honour, saluting as the national anthems of all three countries were played over a loudspeaker, 13 years after foreign troops intervened in the country to topple the Taliban.

Any bets on how long it will take to go bad?
I take by the end of this year in the pool.
Less than 30 days. Any takers?
6 months.
You know ISIS is frothing at the bit.
Well aren’t we an optimist! I say by the end of the week. And it IS the end of the week.

They destroy those bases. They be Taliban bases in a month.
I sure hope we left nothing there but the 4 walls... anything else will be used against us in the near future.
Iraq II.

Let the looting begin.
When did it ever get good?
Trying to civilize the savages of Afghanistan is perhaps the best real-world example of tilting at windmills one can provide. The West has over 2000 years of history verifying this, going back to Alexander. We should have been gone no later than 2003, after the punitive expedition phase, and never have started the ongoing meals on wheels phase we are wrapping up now.
Hello, Taliban.
We could have accomplished the very same result without ever setting foot in Afghanistan.
