A mandatory 21-day quarantine imposed by New York and New Jersey on health care workers returning from West Africa caught local and federal officials by surprise and spurred a heated debate on handling the spread of Ebola without cutting the flow of medical aid to the hardest-hit West African countries.
The policy of isolating medical personnel and others arriving from Ebola-affected countries zones was abruptly implemented Friday by the governors of New York and New Jersey, Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie. The announcement came one day after a New York doctor who treated patients in Guinea became the first Ebola case diagnosed in the city and the fourth in the United States.
The mandate came as a surprise to the federal Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention in Atlanta, according to a federal official familiar with the situation.
"They're not happy," the official said of the CDC. "These two governors said, 'Take this, federal government.' They're very worried we won't be able to get physicians or nurses to go (to countries affected by the Ebola outbreak)."
A New York City official called more stringent screening "a real stunner."
"They did this without consulting the city, and that's not a good thing," the official said of Cuomo and Christie. "They didn't let anyone know in advance."

If the CDC would stop with their double-speak and straight out lies, they would get a bit more respect after a while.
Wow, some libs are not totally brain dead?
Who knew?
The CDC really wants people to but that a doctor will go to Africa for free but draws the line at having to wait 21 days to return to America?
...make that a long while.
Once again, an agency of the federal government has cratered.
The ATF, the FBI, the IRS, the Justice Department..., the SCOTUS, now the CDC...
And that doesn’t even address the House, the Senate, and that imposter in the White Hut.
The quarantine is a minimal measure, one that ought to apply to ANYONE arriving from West Africa. Moreover, that quarantine should include septic isolation. The very idea that we should tolerate that virus flowing in sewers anywhere in America is simply ludicrous.
The CDC doesn’t like being shown to be the incompetent fools they are. Probably run by a bunch of mamma-boys and prima donnas. Even the ebola czar is on record as being a know-nothing.
This is a ‘teachable moment’ for the CDC. They should learn from it; embrace it. Then get back to business.
This is now totally political. Apparently, Obama owns the CDC.
If Ebola was tobacco, the CDC would close the gates,
seal the ship, and shut it down, like white on rice.
It should also apply to any alien arriving from South America.
Countless municipal water system intakes are DOWNSTREAM of sewage treatment plants.
Watching this doctor, his fiancé and friends run roughshod over NYC was a bit too much. Then his family gets in the act to condemn America,
Now, we have that nurse, Hickox who is in quarantine and MAD!
I’ve had it with there entitled attitude.
Great policy change.
Now they have to find a better facility to hold them for 21 days. Holding them in a hospital is stupid. They don’t have the time nor resources to serve as a quarantine facility for people.
I don’t want it to be a government facility like a FEMA camp, either. Too bad these “do gooders” don’t have the compassion for the public’s health, to be trusted with isolating themselves.
it will be, tho.
Too bad these do gooders dont have the compassion for the publics health, to be trusted with isolating themselves.
they're exposing themselves as not really being do gooders at all. They obviously don't really care at all. Maybe they're going to Africa for their resume or a job promotion or just to make other people admire them and THINK they are do gooders.
I missed the doc’s family’s condemning America. You got a link?
I wouldn't expect the virus to survive a treatment plant. It's the rats on the way to the plant that concern me along with the workers who must function in that environment.
If I run across it, I’ll post it. You might want to check Daily Mail and Google first.
“The quarantine is a minimal measure, one that ought to apply to ANYONE arriving from West Africa.”
Absolutely!
Duncan is a good example why it should apply to everyone from West Africa, not just to health care workers.
Interesting that NY is doing this. I wonder how Cuomo’s poll numbers are doing? Normally DemocRAT politicians go out of their way to avoid doing anything to contradict the Obama administration. Unlike Obama, Cuomo is actually on the ballot this year.
I think I found the article(s). You are right, no America bashing.
I think it was anger at his families’ inability to see why his behavior in NYC was inappropriate.
