Google senior vice president Alan Eustace just beat the world record for highest-altitude space jump, The New York Times reports.

A helium-filled balloon carried him 135,908 feet to nearly the top of the stratosphere — more than 25 miles — above the ground, before he cut himself loose and plunged toward the earth at speeds that peaked at more than 800 miles per hour.

Is this real? Apparently it is. A quick Bing search gave several sources. I couldn't find a thread here.

WOW!

Yeah, I just read it, too. About 7500’ higher than the 128,000’ made last year.

The took the stealth route: no corporate sponsors or hype. A private group put qualified people and resources together to break the record.

Speaking of which a friend of mine actually submitted to Guinness book of world records “Most acts of treason by a sitting US President without resulting in impeachment - 7 and counting by Barack Hussein Obama” LOL!

I’m still not convinced. The video footage from BI does not show him in free fall. There is video of a suit under a balloon going up, video before the release then hanging under a parachute.

If it’s real he gets credit for not taking sponsorship even from Google. Of course he IS paid by Google and there is some mention of equipment provided.

Anything related to Google does not pass the smell test AFAIAC.

Some of the comments I read claimed that Baumgartner went on to discourage future space exploration and said it was more important to take care of things on Earth first.

That is not an exact quote.

Alan Eustace needs a life.

OR, he needs the Lord.

It would have been better without a parachute.

The NY Slimes reports, enough said. That video is far from convincing.

It seems like the Austrian had better style - when he was interviewed by the press he said something to the effect that he realized how small he was in this enormous world: Baumgartner showed some humility; this google exec just wanted to break the record.

Yawn. He did it “in secret”.

At least Felix Baumgartner had the balls risk public failure and catastrophe.

And Joe Kittinger had the balls to do it first, with a leaking suit and swelling, freezing hand. Then he shot down a MiG-21 and also was a POW. That old story.

Definitely not a pioneer, just a "me too".

Within a couple of years, this jump will be just another type of high priced "amusement park" ride.

Not an intentional omission on my part.

I just didn’t like how some lib sites were poo-pooing Baumgartner’s jump.
