Obama has been exceedingly unwise in Russia/U.S. relations. Now he thinks by punishing the entire population with sanctions he can force his gay politics on them. I think it is unwise to ignore how newly minted their system is and how easy it would be (and has been) for them to slip back into old ways.
I do not believe Obama really cares about Ukraine. It is a cover to bully Russia. He is playing with fire.
I am not saying Russia is right on Ukraine. But there is a complicated history between them that we cannot pretend does not exist. All we have done is fuel the flames, imo.
So Russia invaded Ukraine because of Obama's gay politics? The mind boggles. Note that Bush sent military supplies to Georgia in USAF airplanes to warn Putin not to annex the entire country, which he appeared to be in the process of doing. The problem with Russia is that the Russian people are unreconstructed imperialists, because unlike the Germans and the Japanese, they hadn't seen 5%-10% of their population killed during an industrial scale war that saw enemy troops occupy their capital. It's got nothing to do with either Obama or Bush, who merely engaged in the normal give-and-take of competitive diplomacy. Russia's revanchist and irredentist streak will probably lead to a future war that either results in (1) a Russian-ruled Europe or (2) a Western-occupied European Russia and a Chinese-occupied Russia east of the Urals.
