New York cops apparently not briefed on how to dispose of Ebola bio-hazard waste

How prepared is New York city to handle Ebola? The cops certainly aren't.

Police who sealed off the Harlem apartment of Dr. Craig Spencer after he was taken to the hospital have apparently not been taught the proper way to dispose of potential bio hazardous material.

While they geared up to enter the apartment and cordon it off, they ended up throwing their gloves, masks, and police tape into a public garbage receptacle.

Sheesh.

The Daily Mail:

With the news that the first confirmed case of Ebola has hit New York City, all attention now turns to how equipped the densely populated metropolis is to deal with the deadly virus - and if the city really is as prepared as they claimed to be in a press conference Thursday evening.

Perhaps throwing things into doubt are photos taken outside the Harlem apartment of Dr. Craig Spencer, who was admitted to the hospital with a 103 degree fever earlier today. They show police officers tossing their gloves, masks and the caution tape used to block off access to his apartment in a public trash can.

Is that really the best place to be putting all of that?

The photos and video, all shot before Spencer's Ebola was actually confirmed, do not show whether these officers actually entered his building.

However, some are suggesting that for the sake of safety - not to mention public sanity - it would have made sense to discard of these masks and gloves and tape in a biohazard bag.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

The gloves and suits must be placed in a hazmat bag which then must be bagged in another hazmat bag which then can be placed in a receptacle which must be placed in an even larger hazmat bag.

Then it will be taken by a contractor and dumped in the Hudson River.

I thought New Yorkers were smarter than the rest of us Americans? Chucky Schumer implied as much when he said NYC would be able to handle Ebola than Dallas would. Not off to a good start I see.

Why are cops doing this work ?

Probably because too many cops vote Republican whereas those in a health or sanitation department who would normally be assigned such work do not.

So they have no training on disposal of any kind of bio hazard?

The police dept. obviously need a new office…the Ebola Captain…who would report to the state Ebola General…who would coordinate with the Ebola Czar.

Problem $olved.

Why are cops doing this work ?

Because they are just as unprepared for ebola as Dallas was and
we have the Obama administration to thank for it all.

The ineptitude of Obama - the gift that just won't stop giving.

The maor and the gov said it was extremely difficult to contract. So... What’s the problem?

They going to regret saying they were so much smarter than Dallas responders?...so soon?

This is likely how ebola will be spread and we won’t know about it for perhaps 6 weeks. Same thing in Dallas. The maintenance guy washed the ebola vomit off the sidewalk with a hose.

Led by the incompetent Mayor Bill de Blasio, the NYC government demonstrates at all levels its incompetence in handling a potential Ebola epidemic in the making. Either the NYPD cops don’t take the disease seriously or they are too infected with political correctness to follow simple handling protocols. None this potentially hazardous waste was handled properly and officers exposed themselves needlessly to contamination. As far as I can see, NYC is playing Russian roulette with Ebola. They may have gotten away with it so far, but after each time they dodge an Ebola contamination, the odds of getting a contamination increase.

His left eye looks creepy.

I think it was his creepy attempt at a wink.

I have noticed that Clinton takes pictures like that too. Sort of a droopy left eye.

I am sure it means something, but we will see.
