Russia's currency has been put under pressure by a combination of falling oil prices and fears over a possible sovereign debt downgrade by Standard & Poor’s Friday.

The ratings agency currently has a BBB- on Russia, only one grade above junk. A further downgrade would push it into junk territory, likely increasing the country's borrowing costs at a time when it is already struggling to meet budget targets due to plunging commodity revenues. If the oil price continues to slide analysts see the country falling into a recession.

Before we all pee down our legs with excitement at the potential for a strong recession in Russia, It is wise to recall the dangers possessed by a wounded bear, particularly a Russian bear. If this were Iran, which is already pretty messed up. I would be quite pleased. For now, ‘they’ are containable... That of course in all of this, if we had a real president. I also tend to think if Harvey milk toast were not in office, the relations with Russia may or not be more friendly, but at least I think there would be greater respect (or maybe I should say..A..respect) for the US presidency and America by the Russian leadership.

“This should make renewing the Soviet Empire a lot more difficult.”

Unfortunately he already MODERNIZED his military while we were disarming so that we could afford to buy Sandra Fluke her abortion pills. I wouldn’t celebrate a cornered bear very much. He still very popular over there and the more he’s isolated, the more likely he is to use his one asset that can take care of his problems, which is his military. If we wanted to fight these guys, 20 years ago was the PERFECT TIME. Not now, not after 6 years of Obama and a rubber-stamp Congress.

Churchill said that Russia is never as strong as it looks and also never as weak as it looks.

Putin's country leaves no reason to hope or wish it well. Any wealth he gets will go for idiotic self-aggrandizement and empire building.

We don’t need to fight them. We need them not to fight their peaceful neighbors for Putin’s glory.

Don’t worry the irrelevant President Obola is going to cripple fracking, end the the pipeline so the oil price goes back up.
This is in keeping with his pledge to Putin to be more flexible

We should all worry about how Obama and the phony environmentalists try to weaken the USA with their relentless attacks on the free enterprise and productive energy sectors of our country.

“We don’t need to fight them. We need them not to fight their peaceful neighbors for Putin’s glory.”

We agree on not picking a fight with Putin, but I don’t know how crashing his economy will help with getting him to leave his neighbors alone. If the economy takes enough of a hit, he WILL test us. If we blink (which I hope we do, because we are in no position to fight him now), then the Europeans will cave economically to whatever he demands, including an end to sanctions, and possibly the sale of overpriced natural gas.

Testing means moving a bit into a country that he is not supposed to, such as a NATO country. That was our big fear during the Cold War and why we had so many weapons on the front lines back then - even though (back then) we had a huge number of nukes. The question at the top was always something like “Is it worth WW3 to recover 50 square miles of West Germany?” We decided, back then, that the best option was not to permit the Soviets to make that move. Now they can, as we have no front line to oppose them. It is not a stable situation.

Don’t be surprised if Obama approves the Keystone pipeline next week.

Waging war takes a lot of money for a nation state. Part of why Putin's been able to bully nations near is because he controls Russia's oil and natural gas wealth. I don't see his country getting stronger or more capable by getting poorer. Granted, he may be willing to pull desperate stunts, but I don't think he's suicidal.

This is part of the bankers plan ,, they have been stealing from us with inflation and printed dollars ,, europe needs to contribute to the bankers also ... spiking the ruble is a great way for the bankers to continue their program of punishing anyone that saves. If you’re not a debt slave you will be (unless you’re in the .01%).

Strange how Russian leaders never seem to catch on to the fact that the economy is their weak flank.

I don’t think it is good news. It is being orchestrated by the west. Internally, Putin is wildly popular, but this paints him into a corner where violence against neighbors is his only way to save face.

I don’t see how any nation in economic peril can be “good new”. Also, I don’t see how Russia is our enemy at this point in time. China poses an actual threat; and, our own government is a clear and present danger to US citizens.

Nice... With us cracking we are helping sink the Russian economy. Maybe the Russians will tell Putin to hit the road...
