MSNBC's Alex Wagner: 'Distressing' Canadian Rampage Seen as ' 'Terrorist Act'
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 10/23/2014 3:18:59 PM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

On her MSNBC show today, Alex Wagner found it "surprising" and "distressing" that some were viewing the attack on the Canadian Parliament by a Muslim convert as a "terrorist act." Wagner was joined by CAIR's Nihad Awad who said that anyone claiming "that there is an Islamic component" in the attack shows either "ignorance or hostility" toward Islam.

Another guest claimed the attack was "much more like ordinary crime." Right. No Islamic extremism here. Zehaf-Bibeau was probably just planning to get the Members of Parliament to empty their pockets.

I wonder if they took a few seconds to actually condemn the act of violence or did they just sit around and whine about it being called a terrorist act.

I'm sure they didn't. The only terrorism they see is when someone calls a terrorist, a terrorist.

LOL there really is no cure for stupidity over at MSLSD..they will defend Islam no matter what..I say send ISIS to MSNBC, since they think what occurred yesterday was NOT terrorism, I say let ISIS chop off their heads, I’d consider it win/win

What I can’t get over is that people actually think it was terrorism. When I was in security forces school with The Marines in 93 I distinctly remember classroom instruction on terrorism and the precise definition. I hate to burst a lot of bubbles but this along with a ton of reported supposed terrorism has cheapened what terrorism truly is....and unless a statement or claim comes out this isn’t it either. According to what I learned and from the FBI website...
“International terrorism” means activities with the following three characteristics:

Involve violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law;
Appear to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
Occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S., or transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they appear intended to intimidate or coerce, or the locale in which their perpetrators operate or seek asylum.*
“Domestic terrorism” means activities with the following three characteristics:

Involve acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law;
Appear intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination. or kidnapping; and
Occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S.

Sorry folks this isn’t it. Unless I missed a statement or proclamation somewhere.

______________

I think that the definition that held in 1993 is no longer operable today.

“MSNBC host finds it “surprising” and “distressing” that some seem Canadian terrorist attack as terrorist attack.”

When you’re NOT SUPPOSED to tell the truth, but you do, it put the media in a bind.

How is a jihadi killing a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, at a war memorial NOT intended to influence policy by intimidating the civilian populace? If your soldiers aren't safe from jihadi rage what does that say for average infidels?

How does continuing this crime spree within their Parliament Building, in proximity to the Prime Minister, whom the shooter may have killed if not stopped, NOT qualify as at least a potential assassination?

Workplace violence?

Well the killer didn't 'work' there but he did drive a car... maybe the useful idiots at MSNBC can refer to this terrorist act as 'road rage'.

Did a statement from a global terrorism organization claiming the killing and demands get made? No....in your example I could grow a beard to ungodly lengths rename myself dress in a robe perform the same actions and it would be termed terrorism. Not every act of murder is terrorism. Again terrorism is global changing like a public beheading with a statement broadcast or a homicide bomber with a group claiming and then making demands. The media has cheapened the term to such an exitent any whacko is now an act of terrorism including some in here.

Only 14 percent of the 45,000 terrorist attacks since 1998 were followed by a credible claim of responsibility. Your’s is the most narrow definition of terrorism I’ve ever heard.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2014/03/malaysia_airlines_flight_370_do_terrorists_claim_responsibility_for_their.html

If you dressed up like a jihadi and killed people you’d just be nuts. This guy WAS a jihadi and nuts to boot, so that makes it terrorism.

Sorry man lol I don’t claim to be an expert but I did go through hundreds of hours of anti terrorism training and instruction...could be outdated having completed it in 93 but anymore the term is utilized loosely.

Here is my definition (in layman's terms):

An act that is intended to strike fear into the civilian population. The act itself is less significant but the resulting fear is great.

For example: the 9/11 attack was less significant when compared to the resulting fear and how the US reacted (justified, in my opinion).

Four planes, 3000 civilians, two buildings, etc. brought the US to its knees — 300 million people in fear, hurt its economy, our government created the patriot act, a war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the government spying on its citizens.

Arguably, a few individuals effectively destroyed the America that we knew.

This character in Canada had the very same intention. He knew that we would be killed, and like a suicide bomber his intent was to strike fear into the civilian population.
