Reza's desire for a democratically accountable government, therefore, if implemented, would almost certainly result in an administration wishing to renew friendly ties with the US.

Iran is over 97% Muslim with most being Shias.

Based on the full article, I don't understand how an appeal of: let's be more like the Infidels, and modernize, and adopt Infidel ways, and collaborate with them would appeal to any Muslims, even Shias.

Can there really be that many Muslim heretics and apostates in Iran? -Tom

Under the Shah Iran was quite Westernized. The women could dress western and we had friendly relations. Iranians were not a threat back then. The Shah could be counted on to counter problems in the direct vicinity. Iraq was never a problem until the Shah was kicked out.

Carter is the root of everything that went wrong with Iran/Iraq and a lot of the terrorist activity that has taken place over the last 15-20 years.

I say this because Iraq and Iran have both played tippy-toe with terrorists. Iran runs arms through Iraq into Syria and Southern Lebanon. Iraq was developing WMDs and using it on it’s own citizens. Hussein was paying the families of suicide bombers in Israel.

Much of this was the direct result of destabilization, the Ayatollahs and the aftermath of Carter’s sheer brilliance.

You hit the nail in the head. The shites are even bigger scum than the sunnies. And we all know how evil the pure sunnies can be.

I think the younger generations, not the morons that make up the ranks of ISIS, etc, just want to be left alone to live their lives. I’m certainly no muslim sympathizer. I’d have no problem with the entire region getting sucked into a black hole in space. But after spending time in Afghanistan and Iraq, they live in the effin’ stone ages.

Pump some MTV, Friends episodes and the rest of that tv crap into those regions and muslim extremism will become a thing of the past.

So what though? Iran/Persia was also a secular Monarchy for over 3,000 years and even post-Islam. It’s only been an Islamic Republic since 1979. They were that percentage Shia Muslim then too and no one was forcing anything down their throats when they chose a secular Monarchy post-Islam and pre- Islamic Republic (even if we do argue that we installed the Shah that’s only 40 years out of thousands of years of Secular Monarchy). What does Iran being 97% shia have to do with anything given the aforementioned?
