China’s defense minister met Thursday with Iran’s navy commander in the latest sign of warming ties between their two militaries following their first joint naval drills in the Persian Gulf last month. […]

China has been building closer ties with the militaries of U.S. rivals such as Russia to help counter American naval dominance in the Asia-Pacific region.

China and Iran also maintain close economic links, although Beijing has joined international efforts to prod Iran into cooperating with the global community over its nuclear programs. …

China has had a Very long standing relations with Iran. Silk Road and all... China is also extremely self-interested, inwardly focused, and not in a position to project itself much beyond its limited somewhat regional so-called dominance.

No, they’re outwardly-focused, otherwise they would not seek to strengthen alliances with Iran and Russia, never mind their de-facto hegemony over key parts of Africa and South America as well as their Asian neighbors (the Senkaku kerfuffle was not for nothing).

Those are very much peripheral points for China. China is certainly up and coming, but at it stands its main focus is mostly inward. China’s main focus is economic on the ‘global scene’. Political only in certain Asian countries. They’ll learn about S. America and especially Africa as the Russians did. China is no match for the U.S. and the U.S. very much recognizes the importance of the AP region. The most dire threat from China to the U.S. is the fact that China is the biggest creditor to the U.S. and we all know what they say about creditors.

Then why are they expanding their military spending?

Because they have to.

Why do they have to? Who is threatening to attack them?

No, they want to. Communism seeks to take over the world. The Communist Manifesto is clear on this point.

No one is going to attack China, not any time in the foreseeable future. China can have great diplomacy in AP region in particular, when it chooses to exercise it, and is a type of broker with certain Asian countries. I don’t believe their ‘Communism’ is seeking to take over the world. In fact, in many ways, China in the last decade at least exercises much of what we would call “Capitalism” economically & domestically. I live in the AP region. China’s main focus is trade and economics. Political influence is secondary (except one or two Asian countries). But, China is quite wary of the U.S. (military) presence in the AP. So, they’re ‘cushioning’ themselves, militarily.

It’s not that any of us believe that China’s communism will take over the world—it’s that the CPC believes it.

China’s trade and economics are a means to an end. You can’t believe what you hear in that region; the media are very tightly controlled.

Honestly, I pay little attention to what the media says. I know based on real actions :) — CPC can believe a lot of things; that’s their issue. Once again, the U.S. is very aware of the AP region & its geopolitical importance.

Real actions such as expanding their military? Countries don’t do that when they are not under attack unless they are planning to attack other countries.

Do you think the U.S. is going to attack China? Or China is going to attack the U.S. or some other country?

The latter is more likely, although the way China wages war is more according to The Art Of War by Sun Tzu, where the philosophy is “breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting” and “all war is based on deception”—they will use even great military might to shatter countries’ wills if they can before actually fighting.
