Bigger than Barstow?

But not bigger than Bailey...

I haven't looked at an aerial shot of the Pocatello switchyard in a while. It seems the place has been almost scraped clean. You can see the outlines of the switches and the circular turntable for moving the locomotives, but it looks very smooth now. Disappointing.

I think everything coming into Cal goes through Barstow and then goes toward LA/SD or north up the valley into Sacramento or the Bay area. Another line takes passenger trains up and down the coast SD to Portland.

I took the train from San Diego to San Francisco in 1961. The next leg of the trip was via ship to Honolulu. I had my 5th birthday on the ship.

I'll take Tucson in August over Houston any time between May and September.

Valley fever is endemic throughout the Southwest. It is a phoney baloney non issue.

I have Valley Fever walled off in my lungs. On an x-ray it resembles TB, but with amorphous shapes instead of nice, round shapes. I have to keep my calcium up or risk having it go active. The prospect of treatment with Vancomycin isn't pretty. The secondary "non-issue" is that I can't risk any form of immune system suppression style of treatment for my rheumatoid arthritis. It's a non-issue until you have it.

I learned of my infection when I was accepted to the microbiology department for graduate school. The department head lost a lung to Valley Fever and insisted that all incoming students in the department be tested for TB and Valley Fever. My TB test faded as usual. The Valley Fever test wrapped around my arm. In retrospect, it is no big surprise. I was an active motocross rider in the canyons of San Diego in my teens.
