Long, Long time ago, I served with a Swedish sailor who had enlisted in November, 1941. More ribbons than you could easily count, including a Navy Cross and 4 Purple Hearts.
This man, possessing heroism beyond belief, rejected the nickname “Swede”.
He would proudly say, “My parents came from Sweden, but understand that I am an AMERICAN.”
I remember hearing as a youngster that, “European immigration to the States, deprived Europe of millions of their BEST people, who then raised generations of Americans.”
I think that was true.

Actually, I think it turned some time after the French Revolution. The then-king was very unpopular, and wagged the dog a lot to try to unite the populace behind him even as used them as cannon fodder in one disastrous military conflict after another.

I think John Paul Jones was employed by Catherine the Great in defending Russia against Sweden.

Any way, Sweden's conduct during WWII sort of sealed their spinelessness.

IIRC, didn't Sweden also pass a law about having to urinate sitting down?
