The EU thrives...upon itself. If the UK and one or two other current members of the EU reach a point where they strongly disagree with the direction and mount a East-EU or European Alliance....then the value of the EU spirals within months.

What led to the EU having great value was the Euro, and the united currency. You walk into a German bank and do business....no matter what you are buying (Spanish car, Polish nail polish, French wine, German peanuts, etc)...you pay in one common currency. Everybody likes this idea, and you can’t find anyone in the business world that says much negative about the Euro except its value against the dollar.

Beyond the currency, it’s worthless. Last year, the EU tried to force down a rule that if you went to a restaurant and were using olive oil....it had to be in a standardized container that came only from the company manufacturing the olive oil. It was within a couple of months of enforcement before all heck broke loose with the olive oil industry saying this was totally unnecessary.

And Britain warns Barroso that without the EU he would be irrelevant.

Better than being irrelevant in your own country.

Nonsense, Britain is the world’s 6th largest economy. Our influence in the EU is questionable anyway considering that we are always outnumbered in every key decision the EU ever takes.

Besides, the world is a much bigger place than Europe, which is a schlerotic and dying continent compared rising giants like Brazil and India.

“Nonsense, Britain is the world’s 6th largest economy. Our influence in the EU is questionable anyway considering that we are always outnumbered in every key decision the EU ever takes.”

The EU would have already collapsed if not for the bailouts of the PIGS. Back during the apex of the Greece crisis there was lots of chatter about there becoming a stratified two tiered EU or perhaps Germany, France UK, a few other northern countries leaving the EU. The southern tier of countries economies must be artificially propped up with bailouts, loan forgiveness endeavors, other fiscal and economic gyrations to keep them in the game. It’s only a matter of time till the breakup of current configuration anyway.

You may pay in one common currency, but said currency can buy far more in poorer parts of Europe than in the more high powered economies, so how good is it anyway? Besides, we are living in a world of computers. Just how difficult is it to do currency transfers?

People think that the Euro represents a free trade agreement, and it did use to, and that was ok. Now its more like something that holds a cartel together.

They cant keep bailing out the southern tier of nations in perpetuity. Eventually they will run out of money.

What a joke. The UK never even went on the Euro. They have never really been in the Euro Union anyway. If they break away nobody but Barrasso will even notice.

I think that it might just be possible, given the historical results of the system since its foundation, that it could be suggested that there are potential flaws, even lethal ones, in the logic and rationales upholding it.
