Texas two leading gubernatorial candidates have earned our respect despite their flaws. Republican Greg Abbott is the model of perseverance for fighting back in a wheelchair from a spine-crushing 1984 accident to become attorney general. Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis demonstrated exceptional courage with her 2013 Senate filibuster to halt legislation aimed at restricting abortion rights.
These two uphold Texas fighting spirit. When this newspaper weighs all the issues, however, Abbott tips the balance as the candidate most capable of sustaining the states economic success and holding in check growing extremism in the state GOP.
Texas Republicans hard-right swing in recent years is troubling. Too many Texans feel alienated by a ruling party that seems indifferent, for example, to the plight of the working poor, the uninsured or youths caught through no fault of their own in immigration limbo.
As governor, Abbott must be a moderating influence and guide a realignment of his party. He has outlined plans that could advance that effort. Where Davis would be likely to encounter ideological battles at every turn, Abbott has the best chance to inspire legislative progress....

Molly lvins must spinning in her grave...
Who did the Ft. Worth Startlegram endorse ?
Much obliged for the confirmation. I suspected as much when I saw the script points “extremist” and “hard right” describing Republicans.
Ah, and they’re also “hard-liners” I see in the article itself. Democrats are never hard-liners as we all know.
The evil witch Ivins never worked for the Morning News, a paper she despised. Her claim to fame came from her days at the old Times-Herald. Both papers were fully onboard with the communist agenda of the DemonRAT party. The distinction was the that News was Stalinist and the Herald was more Maoist in spirit.

“The Star-Telegram Editorial Board recommends Greg Abbott for governor. “

Cory Gardner and Greg Abbott are squishes on immigration so they have been endorsed.
Sorry, I got so carried away in slamming Molly Ivins that I forgot to answer that question. The Ft. Worth paper, once the voice of Amon Carter (who hated Dallas) went for Greg Abbott.
Jeff Sessions and Steve King took over much of the GOP voting block while there was a vacuum with Boehner being a wimp and Romney losing.
The rats regretted it.
If the GOP won the senate in 2010 or 2012 they would have passed the Dream Act at least.

Idjits
Wendy Davis is such a huge bitch, nobody can stand her. I think she may be borderline insane(being generous). Her Narcissism is nearly at Obama’s level. More people recognize it for what it is after 6+ years.
They really had no choice.
Links?
Lived in Cowtown for 12 years...fond memories....
I know Ivins did not work for the Morning news, the comment was just an observation that Abbott got any endorsement at all, would get Molly going mach 1
They only endorse republicans when the results are already certain. If the race had been close their endorsement would have been different.
He more recently said he would not veto a repeal. 80% of voters want it repealed.

By contrast, we can be sure of what will happen in the next two years on issues such as immigration, tax reform, entitlement reform and military spending if the status quo persists: little to nothing. And yet these issues are critical to the nation’s economic health and a long-awaited boost for middle-class incomes.
Gardner has sound ideas on tax reform that could help the economy take off and has expressed willingness to compromise on immigration despite a fairly hard line over the years.

“Greg Abbott believes that the objective of the program is noble,” Hirsch said. “But, he believes the law as structured is flawed and it must be reformed.”
“The Morning News is a communist-run paper. I wonder what their angle is in not endorsing one of their own? Never trust the media for they are the ENEMY! “
You got the last part right. Let me help with first part:
They KNOW that Wendy Davis will lose and there is not a damn thing they can do about it. So what is the choice? Stick with her and be a laughing stock, along with losing subscriptions, or endorse Abbott who is not a solid conservative anyway, and be able to claim credibility as non-partisan. The Houston Chronicle does exactly the same. And the same thing happens at the presidential level. Why should they make fools of themselves (and lose subscriptions) when Romney is going to win Texas anyway?
But now go to the next slot:
In the REAL RACE this year. The one that has a SOLID CONSERVATIVE running against a typical liberal, they endorse the liberal. That is where they’re are putting all of their hopes and they DID NOT pick the conservative. Same when Ted Cruz ran. They endorse Romney (who was not about to lose Texas anyway), but really try to stop Cruz.
They pick their endorsements to have maximum political effect, and to maximize their claim to being non-partisan. When they start endorsing Cruz and Patrick, that is when they have changed.
Make sense?
“Houston Chronicle: Davis for governor Texas needs a leader who’s willing to tackle tough issues too long ignored.”
They slipped here. They should have waited until the Voter ID law was decided. They normally would endorse a non-conservative if he’s walking away with it anyway.
The Dallas Morning News does not even want to be near Wendy Davis, even though they love her to death!!! Ms. Davis is not only going to beaten by Gregg Abbott, she and the entire Democrat Party are going to be slaughtered, politically, in Texas....period!!!
The Dallas Morning News does not....under any circumstances want be “Tainted” by any association with the “Nutcase” Democrat, Wendy Davis!! End of story!!!
