I am NOT arguing with you etc but there sure seem to be a lot of details missing.
Was it the first day of school?
Was it an every day occurrence - the Whites picking up the kid?
If it was everyday there may have been past instances. I mean, how many people have a ‘rent-a-mob’ on hand to come down and put a can of ‘whupass’ on someone? (I mean other than Union Officials etc).
I am by no means rich or well off but I have worked all my life and managed to live in a relatively ‘safe’ environment.
I really can’t imagine to being ‘poor’ enough to be in that circumstance.
That is why I was wondering if they were ‘Yuppified’.
Many a tale of young White, Idealistic Females and young Married Couples moving right into the middle of ‘Indian Country’ despite warnings from friends, family and Police THEN raising hell when they are broken into and the slow response to any ‘problem’ they may have.
You can get along with others without doing very foolish things.
Even back when DC was sort of a quiet, pleasant city, the Female recruits from around the country (the males were under the Draft) to work for the Government were housed in special hotels, with restricted visiting rights and were basically ‘protected’ by their bosses, virtually needing ‘permission’ to get married, move from the assigned hotel etc etc. Try that today...well, never mind.
And this was in the early 60’s - My wife was one of the ‘girls’ and when I went to pick her up, you waited in an outer lobby, had to be announced and no way you were going to get in the ‘living portion’ where all those SYT’s were being warehoused. <: <:.
AND if they were not brought back in ‘time’, there was ‘hell to pay’ and I think they even went so far as to ‘inform the parents’ of infractions etc.....

It was in June, so definitely not the first day of school. But it did say they picked him up from school.
Frankly they looked more white trash to me (unmarried shack-ups, BTW).
Despite popular belief, there ARE places in Baltimore that are still “blue-collar” (i.e., white) as well as well-off places which are basically white.
However, if they were by Greenmount, likely that is not a good place. Hampden, OTOH, is an old blue-collar place famous for its Christmas displays (although, this year they may be protesting THAT by not displaying, because of some damn regulatory garbage).
