Pandemic Preparedness Protocol Being Instituted by Many
Prepare Now, Not Later

Posted on 10/18/2014 10:01:21 AM PDT by truthfinder9

With mishandling of the Ebola threat by the feds, many are taking matters into their hands so they don't become victims. By following Pandemic Preparedness Protocol (or P3), citizens may be what stop Ebola in its tracks.

P3 is a simple five level system to protect oneself and their families from Ebola or other outbreaks. It requires frequent evaluation by the person of their risks. In other words, what are your risks and have they changed? So if you travel, or are around those who do, your risk are higher. Is there an outbreak or case in your town? Your region? Such considerations must be analyzed and monitored.

The levels of P3 are:

Level 5: Low concern. Normal everyday hygiene precautions.

Level 4: Increased precautions: No touching of any public surfaces. Cleaning and disinfection after touching and public surface or contact with others.

Level 3: Includes Level 4 disinfection, while adding disinfection of any bought goods, mail. Begin to decrease unnecessary public exposure (restaurants, fairs, festivals — any non-work, school or grocery activity). Begin to stock supplies for short term disruptions.

Level 2: Cease any unnecessary public activities. Strict disinfection methods. Increase supplies for longer disruption of goods and services. Prepare for potential Level.

Level 1: Quarantine. No one leaves or enters home. Major outbreak.

Some people hope for the best or go about their lives without a care in the world. Hopefully, the Ebola threat will pass with few incidents. But what if it does not? Being prepared is common sense. It means you don't have to be scared.

Would rather hope for the best or prepare for the worst?

Go as low as you can on the micron size.

Look for a good seal around the perimeter of the unit.

Anyone know how long the virus will live in water, if it somehow got in the water supply, would a few drops of bleach or boiling disinfect, just a level 5 question.

Does anyone in TX know if fewer people are attending concerts, games, or if fewer are going to restaurants, shopping, etc? I doubt the MSM will report a reduction in this type of activity.

If the mask doesn’t specifically call out being for bio agents, use with care.

I'm wondering if there's more risk of the virus surviving on rainy or even humid days. I'm pretty much level 2, with restricting indoor crowded activities, or even being in indoor public areas except in the AM before large numbers of people arrive.

It was no issue whatsoever to buy winter supplies a month ahead of time. I also have a lot of books, CDs and DVDs, in case quarantine or obtaining uninfected stuff becomes an issue.

Other than a school here and there closing for a day or two, not that I’ve heard.

Most of the commercially available negative pressure respirators are designed for painting and other chem exposures. I understand that one needs a P99 or higher for something as small as Ebola.

The general recommendation for cleaning/sterilization solution is 0.5% chlorine bleach. That includes cleaning up chunky stuff, and requires 10-15 minutes.

A chlorine solution of 0.5% is the most commonly used for decontamination. It can be made by diluting household bleach (which is a 3-6% chlorine solution) or adding chlorine tablets or powder to water.

Question: How do you make a 0.5% chlorine solution from a 5% chlorine solution? (That is, how much water do you need to mix with 1 litre of 5% chlorine to make 0.5% chlorine?)

A: 9 litres.

I’m going to cancel a procedure scheduled for next month at a local hospital.

Yesterday, a rep from the hospital claimed no one in WI is in danger because the virus “doesn’t live here. “

I am not kidding

Down here in Galveston County, my neighbors are getting concerned and have called to ask about precautions. I worked at UTMB and part of my job was to monitor protocols at the Galveston National Lab Biosafety Lab Level 4.

While I never entered the containment area, I did observe from just outside the containment area. My job was to observe and make sure safety protocols were being followed. Based upon the information I had, I don't believe the public is being told the truth about this outbreak. We treated it as if it were an airborne pathogen and Ebola Reston strain did go airborne.

At this point, I would have on hand a case of sterile gloves, shoe covers, gowns and a proper respirator mask for each member of the household, boxes of N95 viral masks, bleach for disinfecting and insist that nobody comes in without gloving up, putting on a mask and taking their shoes off before entering - shoes remain outside.

Food and water should be put by in case of quarantine and an eye towards hardening your home for safety and security purposes. Sheets of plastic and duct tape should be considered for doors and windows to be secured from the inside. Since I live about 40 miles inland, I have 5/8" lexan storm windows on the house and storm doors.

Prepare as best you can and hope for the best. It is evident that Obama doesn't have much interest in protecting the American public, so we will have to do it ourselves.

Heat can kill it. On one of the Ebola threads the amount of temperature and time was noted.

I suspect that Chlorine might also be effective, but have seen nothing regarding drinking water, just disinfection strengths.

Preparation advice for natural disasters is one gallon per person for however long you think you need it. I’d say at least 2 months if you believe there’s going to be an outbreak, and more than that if it’s in the water supply-get rain barrels set up and ready to go, or swimming pool or something.

My 18 yr old son is in college in Tyler TX, my whole family lives in northern TX, is it time to pull him out and bring him to Northern Mi where we now live? Getting accurate information is near impossible - even my brother in law who flys a medivac helo out of Mineral Wells has no clue.

Personal observations:
* if there are concerns about ebola exposure in the school, more kids are pulled out at least for a few days; it isn’t widespread (more than a few children) but will be if there are actual pediatric cases
* hand sanitizer requests by the schools are up, so much so I had to order boxes of it off Amazon because the drug stores are out
* Canalfest and other events are still going on, can’t tell about attendance
* schools are actively informing parents of exposure risk like “three kids were on this flight, being monitored, no active cases” while another near me proudly reports “no risk for us”

A good measure though is whether or not the State Fair going on sees a decline in attendance, since that is a huge event going on all of this month.
