ROCKUMENTARY: OCTOBER 18, 1972

Tom Lehrer once joked that the Army does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion – or ability. I found the truth to be quite the opposite. I turned out to be a gifted staff officer, and as a second lieutenant I filled a captain’s slot down at the motor pool.

I had exceptional support. My motor NCO was a black E-7 from the old “”brown shoe” Army who came to us from the big motor pool in Saigon, and he said, “LT, you follow my advice, and I’ll make you look good.” I did, and he did. I was cited by the Deputy Commanding General of Fort Lewis for having the best motor pool on base.

So what were you up to?

Cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

This band was Motown’s Funk Brothers backed with pickup musicians from the Detroit Symphony.

#10 – Raspberries: “Go All the Way”

This was Eric Carmen’s big break. From his Julliard background and his love of Rachmaninov, you can hear the tonal misdirection. The intro, the opening line and the rest of the song are in different keys (A Major, G Major, E Major).

Good evening, Maestro!

I was at the start of my sophomore year at Loyola, majoring in English Lit., working in a home wine-making store, playing a mean hand of Bridge, and dating the first Mrs. MacNessa - exciting days! And tonight's No. 10, "Go All The Way," was most apropos at the time.

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
