Question for media watchers: Shep Smith is touted as a hard news reporter?? (Vanity)

Posted on 10/17/2014 10:31:34 AM PDT by ru4liberty

In their descriptions of the various programs on the fair and balanced network, they try to sell Shep as a hard-news guy. I've even heard him allude to that characterization concerning himself.

I don't generally watch his show because he comes across as an arrogant little fart, but the times I have watched have caused me to scratch my head at the claim that he's a true (neutral) news reporter. I found it extremely unprofessional when, during the Blagojevich era, he always used the phrase "Planet Blago" to introduce those segments. He seemed quite amused with himself as his expression turned to a mirthful smirk when he uttered the phrase.

In recent days, I have heard two people comment on Shep's appropriate assessment of the media's overkill of the Ebola coverage. Uh, Shep's assessment? Isn't a hard-news person supposed to give you the facts and let you sort them out and draw your own conclusion? Yes, yes. I know. In a perfect world, that would be the case. And we certainly don't live in a perfect world. But I consider these statements revealing, so much so that they put the reputation of FOX News' hard-news division in the basement with the other news sources we love to hate. Unless FOX had a "Commentary" label on the screen when he made these assessments, they need to stop trying to sell him as a real news guy. I don't give a flip how big and fancy his "news deck" is!

So my question is, do you believe FOX is being deceptive/disingenuous in their claims about Shep?

He is one of about a dozen reasons I refuse to watch Fox News. Rove and McCain constantly being portrayed as the voice of the GOP tops that list of reasons.

When mentioning the Chick-Fil-A story he made the remark “story of intolerance”...he’s a liberal Homo!!!

I don’t think FNC ever labeled Billo a conservative. I know others in various other media venues have done so, but FOX hasn’t. (Comcast’s blurb about Billo’s show reads: “Conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly mixes news, interviews and his take on current events.” I’m sure that’s written by Comcast and not FOX, especially since I’ve compared these descriptions with family and friends whose carriers are not Comcast and learned that their blurbs were different.) I agree with you that Billo isn’t conservative, although I do find things to agree with him about. Even so, he’s not being sold to us by FNC as anything but what he is — opinion. Shep, on the other hand, is supposed to be the program we can turn to to get the unvarnished news of the day. This implies that his presentation should be devoid of opinion.

Ok. I probably did read the “conservative” description of Bill O on Comcast.

I have been much less aggravated since I stopped believing the lies that Fox is “fair and balanced” and, therefore, stopped viewing their shows.

OK, I get what you’re saying, but I consider it an insult to me as a serious news consumer. I neither need nor want my news “cutesied up.” I always thought the “Planet Blago” intro was Shep’s way of making the news cutesy. Instead, it was distracting to me in the same manner a needle skipping on a record (remember vinyl?) would ruin the song for me.

I don’t care about his sexual orientation. It’s his delivery that keeps me from watching. BTW, I love David Venable’s QVC program. Watch it every Sunday. I love to cook and have spent plenty of $ on his show. He’s personable, kind to his guests and funny. So you can see, sexual orientation has nothing to do with how I assess how people do their jobs.

You, sir, are a man after my heart! You're one of the very few on this thread who read my question. While most others felt the need to share their opinion of Shep Smith (yawwwn-n-n-n)*, you read my actual question. ("So my question is, do you believe FOX is being deceptive/disingenuous in their claims about Shep?")

Like a responsible, engaged news consumer, you have actually taken action to ask FOX to remedy the situation! I applaud you and am ready to follow your lead.

I don't mind if he's a leftist. I don't like that he's presented as a neutral news anchor. I spend a lot of time watching FOX News, so I have a vested interest in their being a legitimate news station. I want opinion and analysis limited to the opinion and analysis shows. I do NOT want it in my straight** news.

*I miss the olden days of FR when people were more prone to thoughtful replies and less inclined to the drive-by, I-didn't-really-read-the-post replies. The latter bores the liver outta me.

**No pun intended :)

You’re probably right, and isn’t that a shame? So many venues and not one opportunity for an intelligent, thinking person to get the facts so they can draw their own conclusions.

Two more replies to a question I didn't ask. (sigh)

From the OP: "So my question is, do you believe FOX is being deceptive/disingenuous in their claims about Shep?"

I don’t have a problem with Sheppard being the resident leftist either if they need to exhibit fair and balanced programming, but they are doing it in the wrong way.

The knock on Fox by the MSM has always been that they are a biased network. It’s undeniable that their opinion journalists tend to be conservative, but those shows are clearly opinion shows and labeled as such.

Having one of their few straight news shows become tarnished by blatant personal opinions is not the way to answer the MSM criticisms although I suppose the MSM criticism will be muted since Sheppard is a closet gay and open lefty.

I don't remember hearing FNC touting Shep. I can only take your word for it...or not.

Therefore, I can't honestly answer your question.

I do remember in response to call to send Juan to CNN (?), Roger Ailes (IIRC) said, "Only if they take Sheppard Smith."

Here's a question to you--

When was the last time YOU heard FNC "tout" Sheppard Smith as a hard news reporter?
