I root for the two most hated teams in the nation: the SF Giants (I’m from the Bay Area and have rooted for the Giants since 1960); and Notre Dame (I’m an Irish Catholic conservative American who graduated from ND in 1976).

I’ve been in exile in the DC area since August, 1976.

Go Giants!!! Go Irish!!!

Weren’t both the Angels and Giants wild card teams in a series a number of years ago?

This is the first time 2 wildcard teams have made it to the world series in the history of baseball.

2002 Angels and Giants were both Wild Cards so, no, it’s not.

There was some sort of sporting match?

Giants fan here and I agree with you completely. Matheny would be snatched up by another team quickly. First class baseball mind there always. Even after a great career ended by concussions.

STL fans are spoiled... They have had guys like Schoendist (sp?), Herzog, Torre, LaRussa. All legends.

Versus me, who has had to endure Jimy Williams, and Cecil Cooper just within the past 10 years.

Why, certainly. The Giants are a baseball team. From Tokyo.

Think again. I live outside the Bay Area and I
will be rooting for the Giants just like I have
since 1958. In fact, whether you believe it or
not the Giants have one of the largest visiting
team followings of any team in the NL.

“I think everyone outside of the Bay Area is rooting for the Royals.”

I’ll root for the Giants. California team, National League, underdogs.

True. What could be said is this is the first time neither league had a top-3 record in the World Series (in 2002, the Angels had the 3rd best record in the AL but were the wildcard team).

It isn’t like the State of Misery is Southern. Well maybe South Mid-West

Isn’t it about time that Bruce got the manager of the year vote???

That vote is reserved for the performance during the regular season. Even removing Bochy's first two seasons with the Giants to phase away from the Bonds era, the Giants have gone 524-448 under Bochy during the regular. This averages out to a 87-75 record.

Of those six seasons, the Giants have been to the postseason just three times. It's what Bochy does once in the postseason that's impressive. That alone may get him some consideration for the HOF.

I continue to be disgusted by the Giants' dog-in-the-manger block of the A's proposed move to San Jose, designed to drive them out of the Bay Area - the sheer ingratitude and shamelessness involved deserve some sort of championships of their own. But there's no denying how good a manager Bruce Bochy is, how good the bullpen is, and how well this club understands how to play high-pressure post-season baseball.

Don't like seeing the Giants in the World Series? Don't let them get into the post-season at all - it's been the only way to keep them out since 2010. Once they're in, their pitchers suddenly operate on another level, that great bullpen quickly restores order if a starter happens to get chased early, and they manufacture runs out of fielder's choices, infield singles, and errors.

I don't know how they'll do against the Royals - but then I didn't think they could get by the far more talented Nationals, or the smart, tough Cards or even past the fast-rising Pirates. I wouldn't bet against the Giants, and I'll be cheering for Bochy, the players and Brian Sabean, while continuing to despise their ownership and executive management.

I agree. Once they moved into their new ballpark and it was obvious they would draw well even in off years, they should have let go of their South Bay hold.

Part of this may stem from the fact that Giants ownership got stuck with bill to design, build, and pay for their current ballpark. The city of San Francisco did little to fund the ballpark, and even allowing them the site to build barely passed a vote.

It's why I rarely associate the Giants with the city of San Francisco. Those outside of California, particularly conservatives, do. But that's rarely the case for those who live here and are outnumbered.
