A nightmare scenario of Ebola raging unchecked among millions of slum-dwellers in Africa's largest city has given way to a rare example of a victory over the virus. Amid the gloom surrounding the escalating crisis in West Africa, developments in Lagos show how the right techniques at the right speed can bring about a welcome result.
With a population of more than 170 million, Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation and there were fears that Ebola would take hold when a Liberian-American arrived with the disease in July.
Instead, along with much smaller Senegal, Nigeria is now on the brink of being clear of the virus for a 42-day period at which point the World Health Organization (WHO) can declare it Ebola-free.
The outcome could so easily have been far uglier, and the fact that the news is happier is due to an astonishing story of medical detective work.

Nigeria has many problems - corruption and inefficiency but its also one of Africa’s few vibrant and free societies after decades of military dictatorships.
I have to hand it to them they did what we still can’t do - remain ebola-free. I’d feel safer in Lagos than in Dallas.
At the height of the investigation 20,000 persons were being monitored daily for signs of infection.
Apparently they are exporting the “at risk” to the US via JFK, from another post.
Well, part of their strategy seems to involve placing infected people on planes bound for JFK Airport ...
GMTA!
Yea, the timing of my posting that article was not the best. Here I am holding them up to praise and then the go and do that. Yikes.
But, of course, the guy at JFK “doesn’t have” Ebola.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
I don’t believe any of this crap from governments or their “media” outlets anymore. I’ve been hearing that the west African countries have stopped Ebola “dead in its tracks” and the next news report says that they expect the deaths from Ebola to continue to double each week. WHICH IS IT BONEHEADS!!! DO ANY OF YOU KNUCKLEHEADS EVEN HAVE A CLUE???
There are a lot of countries there.
Some think they are OK, some are at risk of an outbreak at any time and know it. One is in enormous trouble. Two are in a state of approaching mass-death unless the US comes through with a vaccine and a treatment in the next three to six months.
The rapid tests are out there. (Tulane Univ) The remedies are already produced. (Israel Medical Companies) The vaccines have been created. (BING it)
The question is, Why is this being allowed to promulgate?
If my statements are incorrect then I'll gladly take the licks. All my statements came from FR info with citations.
Hasn’t the BBC disallowed any comments being posted from skeptics? I noted hardly anyone questioning the article, just ass kissers, that think all is fine. No mention if they have sealed their borders, which is the only effective way to prevent people getting infected.
Perfect. Did you come up with that?
A link to this thread has been posted on the Ebola Surveillance Thread
No, I've seen it posted to a number of forums. Fits though, doesn't it?
Very effective. Needs to be turned into a graphic
Hey Obama, be a MAN - Implement a travel BAN!!
Thanks for the ping!
