The Ebola Effect Arrives: Half Of Americans Will Avoid International Air Travel Out Of Ebola Fears
Zero Hedge ^ | 10/16/2014 | Tyler Durden

Remember when Obama said "Putin was isolated", despite the Russian having the explicit support of the BRIC nations, and thus at least half of the world's population? Well, as irony would always have it with this particular US president, the tables have promptly turned, and paradoxically where ISIS failed to "terrorize" Americans into a state of paralyzed daze, the West African virus has succeeded in isolating none other than America, and as a brand new Reuters poll reveals, nearly half of Americans are so concerned about the Ebola outbreak that they are avoiding international air travel!

In other words, global trade, commerce and simply transit, already declining thanks to the global depression rematerializing now that the Fed's latest placebo round has worn off, are about to slam into a brick wall.

The poll results come as health officials said the second nurse infected at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas had flown from Ohio to Texas with a slight fever the day before she was diagnosed.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which surveyed 1,577 Americans 18 or older online, found nearly 80 percent were concerned about the Ebola outbreak, with 41 percent saying they were "very concerned" and 36 percent "somewhat concerned."

And while the one thing that is certain to provoke an even greater popular panic at the invisible terror, is at least one more Ebola case developing on US soil, the whistleblowing admission by another nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian will hardly boost America's confidence in the way the Ebola crisis is being handled.

NBC Chicago reports that a Dallas nurse who cared for a co-worker who contracted the Ebola virus at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital said the facility was unprepared

Just watch...You haven’t seen nothing yet...

IMO, one would have to be stupid or ignorant to fly on a commercial aircraft today. Getting on a sealed tube with hundreds of strangers? lol..

There are probably a lot of people who were inclined to bag domestic air travel before this, let alone after.

Sorry, I stay far away from corrupt manipulated stocks/Wall Street.

Getting involved with all that has as much appeal as getting on an airliner today. But feel free.

This just in about the “Ebola” plane...

The airline is reaching out to customers via e-mail, Frontier spokesman Todd Lehmacher confirmed. The contents of the e-mail are not yet known.

The plane flew five flights on Tuesday, prior to the announcement that Vinson had tested positive for Ebola:

Flight 2042, Dallas to Cleveland

Flight 1104, Cleveland to Fort Lauderdale

Flight 1105, Fort Lauderdale to Cleveland

Flight 1101, Cleveland to Atlanta

Flight 1100, Atlanta to Cleveland

On Wednesday, the plane was flown without passengers from Cleveland to Denver. It landed at Denver International Airport around 7 p.m. and was taken to a hangar, where the airline says it will undergo another cleaning — including replacement of seat covers and carpet in the vicinity of the passenger’s seat — and changing environmental filters.

As a further precaution, two pilots and four flight attendants have been placed on 21-day paid leave, Frontier said.

Can’t imagine that the cruise ship industry will fare very well either. The couple 100 employees on board every ship come from all over the world. Who knows how well they are vetted.

Agreed. They'd have no way to properly isolate an ebola victim and protect the passengers. We've seen from the many serious norovirus outbreaks on ships that it spreads very rapidly in the tight confines. Ebola would be a nightmare.

WOC - I know you know most of this, but I'm re-posting for benefit of all ...

Trying to get a reliable Quick-Test for EBOLA - [10/03/2014] This New Ebola Test Is As Easy As a Pregnancy Test, So Why Aren’t We Using It?

Dr. Bob Garry, a scientist at Tulane University, is working harder than ever to get one possible solution—a rapid diagnostic test approved.

[Regarding the present, lengthy waiting for symptoms to show ... and the current tests]

It’s the breakdown in care caused by delay that Garry and his team are hoping to fix. The scientists began working in West Africa roughly 10 years ago on another fever called Lassa. Over the course of a few years, they developed a rapid diagnostic test that allowed doctors to give patients a diagnosis on the spot. When the first cases of Ebola began popping up in West Africa, Garry and his team began “fortifying” existing labs they had in the area. In the creation of the Lassa fever test strips, they had also made a similar, but separate, Ebola test. But without any presence of Ebola in the region until this year, they were unable to test them until now.

The value of the rapid diagnostic test lies in its simplicity. It consists of a small white lancet, which requires just a small drop of blood. In 15 minutes or less, a positive or negative line will appear on the test, indicating Ebola positive or negative. "They work like pregnancy tests except its blood," says Garry.

“What our tests would permit one to do is to basically see if a person has Ebola on the spot,” Garry tells me. “They are not perhaps as sensitive as a PCR. That’s a very sophisticated test, but they don’t really have to be. What we’re most interested in doing is coming out with a test that could detect when someone is infectious, immediately.”

[10/06/2014] U.S. Ebola patient receives experimental drug ("Brincidofovir" also called "CMX-001") from Chimerix

CMX-001 is a compound called a nucleotide analog. Its molecules behave enough like those that form the genetic material (nucleotides) of viruses such as Ebola that the microbes incorporate it into their DNA or RNA, a sister molecule.

But CMX-001 is different enough that, once incorporated, it prevent a virus's genetic material from replicating. That stops the virus from spreading throughout the body.

[10/07/2014] Go Inside San Diego Lab Working to Cure Ebola Virus

[Paraphrasing ...] A La Jolla lab is on the front lines of the fight against the Ebola Virus. Dr. Erica Ollmann Saphire is part of the [Scripps La Jolla] team spanning 25 labs across the globe that is making images of how the virus works. [The La Jolla team's] work has led to a medicine taken [so far] by two Americans infected with Ebola.

[08/04/2014] The Sorrento Valley lab, Mapp Biopharmaceutical uses images created at Scripps [La Jolla] to come up with the experimental medicine called Z-Mapp.

In the video of Dr. Erica Ollmann Saphire, she explains the basic working of Z-Mapp while holding up a molecular model. The Blue antibody at the top of the model, tags the Ebola virus for destruction by the immune system. The Green antibody and the Yellow antibody neutralize the Ebola virus infection. These two antibodies lock the virus' machinery together so the machinery (see above) cannot unravel and drive into a cell.
