Ban flights from Ebola-stricken nations [Ted Cruz Op-Ed]
TribTalk ^ | Oct. 15, 2014 | Ted Cruz

Posted on 10/16/2014 6:18:33 AM PDT by SoConPubbie

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa presents an urgent public health threat to America. The loss of life and the growing epidemic are heartbreaking and tragic. And we need serious leadership in the United States to protect our citizens today.

To date, roughly 8,000 people have contracted Ebola in West Africa. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that under worst-case-scenario conditions, the number of Ebola cases could reach 1.4 million by January. Of those, over 50 percent would likely lose their lives.

We need to do everything we can to contain this outbreak, to help the people who are suffering in Africa and to prevent this epidemic from spreading. But our first priority must be to protect the health and safety of American citizens. The Constitution sets forth the federal government’s responsibility to “provide for the common defense.” That should be the president’s focus.

Already, one Liberian citizen, Thomas Eric Duncan, was able to fly on a commercial flight to Texas, arriving at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport infected with Ebola. Duncan lost his life, but not before transmitting the disease to a Dallas nurse, Nina Pham, who bravely put her life in jeopardy caring for him in his final days. Officials announced on Wednesday that another health care worker had been diagnosed with the virus. Our prayers are with that worker, Pham and Duncan’s grieving family.

We all very much hope the virus will not spread any further in Texas. But hope is not a strategy. Given the gravity of the threat, common sense dictates that it’s time to ban flights from the countries afflicted by Ebola.

The federal government has implemented screenings at five major American airports for passengers arriving from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Notably, the screenings don’t include other airports like DFW, where Duncan arrived.

If this gets out of hand, as it appears to be doing, you are soon going to have African countries (and every other place on the planet) banning flights from the US.

60% of Americans want the ban. How about not flying? That would get the airlines attention and ultimately Obama’s.

I know alot of people have to fly for business and cannot do this without jeopardizing their job but how about leisure flyers? Postpone trips until a ban is installed.

There are NO direct flights from any of the countries, IMHO. The ban needs to be on persons holding passports from those countries... OR... persons who have traveled to/from those countries. Easy to do by looking at passports.

How long was Duncan on that plane? Could he have become contagious while in flight?

Who is to say that may not happen yet?

With all due respect to Sen. Cruz, the focus cannot simply be on banning flights from the affected countries, since there are no direct flights from the affected regions to the US. The focus must be on banning travellers from the affected countries (or who have visited the affected countries within the 21 day incubation period.

Even if a ban is enacted in the next several weeks, it’s too late. Should have been done many weeks ago when the disease was exploding in West Africa. Duncan would never have arrived.

Banning flights from the afflicted countries is a prudent, common-sense step until the epidemic is brought under control.

And since we don't have any flights between the U.S. and the afflicted countries, totally useless.

“60% of Americans want the ban.”

And the rest are suicidal and/or totally deranged and should therefore be ignored. Or maybe just plain childish and, of course, children have no say I adult matters.

Exactly.

Obama should be impeached. He is a traitor who cares more about the economy of Liberia than the lives of Americans.

Don't fix it for me because I'm not the one who said it in the first place.

0bama et al are clearly allowing and helping Ebola to spread.
If we have a real outbreak, as we have now in West Africa, 0bama and his government MUST be deposed immediately by all and any means.

If people are dying in the streets, we will be long past a civil political solution and adherence to constitutional procedure. I suppose we could have Ebola infected patients march on DC if they have the energy . The military had better start thinking about a coup.

The elitists, globalists and eugenicists have gone too far. As Sun Tzu would probably agree, the people will soon be fighting on desperate ground.

Talk is cheap. Where is some action? SENATOR Cruz should be in Washington with his SENATE and HOUSE colleagues doing something. They could craft a bill banning direct and indirect traffic from Africa, close the border, etc. Nope, they like to talk, not act. If Senator Cruz thinks he might someday want to be president (despite questions about his citizenship, fair-is-fair, many of us challenged Obama’s, Cruz has issues), anyway, if he wants to be president, here is the perfect opportunity to step up and show some action, to move beyond cheap talk.
