Nurses are furious, may strike, over inadequate Ebola training

The country's largest nursing union is considering the possibility of picketing hospitals if they do not offer more extensive training on how to treat Ebola patient.

Nurses United executive director RoseAnn DeMoro said in a conference call Wednesday that her group may take "pretty dramatic action for nurses across the country" that could "escalate into possible pickets at hospitals."

"We have heard consistently across the country that there are no protocols in place," she said.

Like the Coal workers who backed Obama and got stabbed in the back.
Unions live for one reason and that reason is the life of Communism.

There’s protocol, and there’s PROTOCOL. I think most hospitals in the country operate within a profit margin situation that is pleasant, and there’s a limit to any extra gear or training for any doctor or nurse there. So, we reached it.

If you drag ten individuals into some local community hospital with Ebola....the care situation is then overwhelmed and the statistical average of the ten surviving...rapidly decline.

When we get around to three hundred in every major urban area within a quarantine situation....the city, state and federal apparatus will no longer be able to handle that much Ebola. National Guard getting called in? I suspect that a quarter of the guys will ask questions and disappear for six months to wait this out. There just aren’t enough National Guardsmen anyway, to handle a mess like this.

Early on, they had one slim chance of controlling this. That moment came and went.

“Strike”? Look at how long it takes for sanity to kick in these days.

I really wonder why the nurses aren't saying this.

Many nurses, particularly the ones running national organizations, probably still believe that big government is the solution. Not the problem.

A community hospital will probably see hundreds of individuals with the flu, which has similar symptoms to Ebola's early in the disease process.

--> CDC: Ebola "Signs and Symptoms"

If Ebola continues it's exponential growth in Africa, cases will continue to appear in the US, and they will continue to be missed.

...”I don’t know why, but I’m somewhat suspicious about this coming from a union. I agree that health care workers haven’t been adequately prepared for the Ebola epidemic. But I can’t help thinking there is some ulterior motive behind this “protest” — such as a demand for higher wages.”...

I do not think that is the case here. This is a life/death matter and any nurse or doctor with human hopes and dreams has to worry about this disease. We can deal with what we know. It is what we do not know that will get us. I have predicted from the start of this that we would see nurses, particularly, leaving their jobs if they believe their lives are in danger. In that case, hospitals might have to pay bigger bucks to hire people willing to take the risk with their own lives. It will all depend on how big the risk is. Those nurses should be picketing for the Visas from the hot zones in Africa to be pulled. The source of infection must be isolated until we can get a handle on this. Then, there is the open border.......

Rather than strike demanding to be given stuff, get creative, organize you own Ebola training. That would be even more embarassing to the CDC, public health organizaions, doctors and hospital administrators.

I “think” Nina Pham requested to stay in TX to be near her family and friends. I read that somewhere, but I don’t remember where. Nor do I remember the source.

I think she was hospitalized before “they” (the CDC?) decided to use “regional” hospitals.

Maybe someone else has a more definitive answer. Sorry. Buffy

Connie Francis sang it best: Whose Sorry Now?

My heart still goes out to these health care workers who cared for Mr. Duncan who — most say — came here carrying the virus in hopes of getting our medical care.

I hope our elected officials put a ban on travel from the ebola-ravaged countries in Africa.

I am calling my representatives....please call yours.

When I started calling two weeks ago, I got mostly the cold shoulder — but last night I read where John Boehner is now on board. I will start calling the others again today.

It is a Drudge headline. I tried to cut and paste the link, but it didn’t look workable. Sorry.

Yes, I know how to cut and paste. Must have done something else wrong. Sorry ...

I am completely on the nurse’s side on this.

Their employers and the CDC are endangering the nurses with a lack of training, a lack of preparation, improper protocol and inadequate PPE.

IMO, this is the only legitamite function of a union...protection of its workers from harm.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I can’t help thinking there is some ulterior motive behind this “protest” — such as a demand for higher wages.

Just spoke to a nurse this morning. Have to disagree with you, as far as the rank and file. Union leaders can be expected to exploit every crisis; but the nurses themselves are justifiably scared.

What has the CDC been doing with the billions we give them every year?

Here’s what we get from the CDC...

Eat less

Exercise More

Wear a condom.

I really wonder why the nurses aren't saying this.

I really wonder why we are hearing nothing from ANA and the National League for Nursing. Actually, I don't wonder. They're liberals, just like AMA. They'll support Obama till the end.

Message to ANA and NLN and AMA: you're going to lose thousands of members if you don't support your nurses.

Hospitals are WAY underprepared for this all accross the country. Management is liberal and opting for the russian roulette style Obama approach of not preparing and ignoring the risks.

We could train four monkeys to hold up signs - and once a year the New York Times could come take a picture... We would save billions....
