There is a strong totalitarian streak in too many people pushing whatever cause they believe in.

It sounds like this writer is a vegetarian, for whatever personal reasons, but does not want to impose that status on others.

Face it, whether the issue is homosexuality, saving the whales, global warming, alleged racism, or any other cause you can think of, the loudest most active people are also the most obnoxious and most totalitarian in their thinking. And if they had the power, those supporting those causes want to impose their views on the rest of us.

The differences between Liberals and Conservatives.

If a Conservative does not like guns, he doesn’t buy one. If a Liberal does not like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. (Except for the Police and their personal body guards)
If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he does not eat meat. If a Liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
If a Conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a Liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.
If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. If a Liberal is down-and-out he wonders who is going to take care of him.
If a Conservative does not like a talk show host, he switches channels. A Liberal demands that those they do not like be shut down.
If a Conservative is a non-believer, he does not go to church. A Liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced banned from everywhere.
If a Conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. If a Liberal decides he needs health care, he demands that the rest of us pay for his health care.

There may still be hope for the writer, then.

A Conservative who doesn't like chicken, doesn't eat chicken.

A Liberal who doesn't like chicken, works to ensure that no one, anywhere, will ever be able to consume chicken, or even something that tastes like chicken, ever again. And they'll be smug and self-righteous in their cause.
