Ted Cruz calls for ban on travelers from African countries battling Ebola
Dallas Morning News ^ | 10/14/14 | TODD J. GILLMAN

Sen. Ted Cruz called Tuesday for a ban on travelers from West African countries grappling with Ebola.

“Common sense dictates that we should impose a travel ban on commercial airline flights from nations afflicted by Ebola,” he said by phone from Texas. "There’s no reason to allow ongoing commercial air traffic out of those countries.”

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

“People book these flights as much as a year in advance, and rebooking can cost big bucks. Crews and aircraft are already budgeted. To pull a long-haul Intl flight means as many as three VERY expensive assets could be sitting on the ground, making nothing. Finding new markets for them is a VERY expensive proposition.”

Stopping the movement of about 10,000 times as many people right after 9/11 didn’t seem to destroy our airline business.

These countries are a trickle.

I disagree.

Kudos to Mr. Cruz. Shut down these flights.

Despite the huge subsidies given to airlines after 9/11, and the waiver of liability, some airlines still did not survive it, or recover from it.

United filed in late 2002, Sabena, Sun Country, Midway and National filed and stopped operating, airlines like Aloha, VASP, Swissair, Northwest, Delta, Air Canada, USAir, Hawaiian, Ansett, and Alitalia couldn’t recover and eventually filed, and dozens of smaller airlines folded.

Somehow I don’t see West Africa having the same effect as our lockdown.

On the other hand I took a look and round trips to Liberia are now $4,000 to $8,000, for ECONOMY. So you have a point, there are some BIG BUCKS out there by flying to Monrovia, at least.

I had one person tell me it was manpower and cost.

I didn’t agree. Seemed to me we have people checking Visas already before people board aircraft.

Just deny them boarding.

How hard is that?

Oh...I don’t know...what’s the kill percent on the flu vs. Ebola? That’s what I think is the problem.

The one on the left looks like a freakin’ zombie. Or someone just poked a tomato stake up his nether orifice.

you opine: “but this isn’t a highly contagious disease. “

Seems the World Health Org. disagrees. What is YOUR field of expertise?

“WHO warns 10,000 new cases of Ebola a week are possible”

you say “A little late to the party Ted”

Maybe you’re a little late on the news...

This isn’t the first time he’s said it - He said it well over a week ago -

BTW, what party? Care to name all the other politicians who’ve called for the ban?
