The hypothesis was that the sick pax had made the Hajj together and had caught Ebola from fellow Hajjers. Unlikely, because:

• They all became ill at the same time, but we know the incubation period is highly variable.
• The Saudis aren't letting West Africans make the Hajj, so it's unlikely there are Ebola sufferers in Mecca.
• Persons suffering from Ebola are not likely to be up for walking seven times in a dense crowd around a big black cube.
