Spain will be free from the threat of further contagion from Ebola on October 27 if all those who had close contact with an infected nurse remain without symptoms by then, a hospital director said Monday.

Concerns that Ebola could spread in Spain have been high since the nurse, Teresa Romero, on October 6 became the first person diagnosed as having caught the deadly haemorrhagic fever outside of Africa.

Is she dead? Is she no longer infectious?

All good points.

Spain did indeed though do the right thing in rounding up those that could be infected. Even killed her dog.

Not so sure the CDC has done the same with our nurse and her dog will live. Not so sure we should expect the same as Spain.

I believe that the disease runs it’s course in about 21 days. If she survives she should no longer be communicable by then.

Yes, and the clock for others contracting it from her should continue for 21 more days.

Correct.

WHO guidelines indicate 42 days must pass before an outbreak is considered over.

Until the next Ebola carrier flies, walks, or rides into the country. Then it starts all over.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Viruses are forever.

Ebola survivors are carriers and can transmit the disease for up to two months after their recovery, specifically by sexual contact. There have been a number of well-documented cases where this has happened.

Survivors will be justifiably avoided by the uninfected. On the other hand, they will be preferred as health care givers, since they will be at minimal risk for the disease.

She should be at her most infectious now if the disease is running its normal course. Last I heard, her health was declining and she needed a respirator. This is when she would have the highest virus density in body fluids and would thus be the most contagious.
