The 700-pound tule elks antlers jutted upward against the backdrop of the sloping, grassy hills and brilliant blue sea along the Point Reyes National Seashore, a magnificent symbol of both conservation success and human-wildlife conflict.
The bull was one of dozens of free-roaming tule elk spotted one recent day enjoying the bucolic Point Reyes peninsula. Their presence on the sweeping hillside pastures represents the convergence of two great Marin County success stories the preservation of historic agricultural land and the reintroduction of a native species once thought to be extinct.

Perhaps we should reintroduce T. Rex to Montana and see how that goes?
I don’t know how aggressive the average grass-munching Cattle can be, but I suspect, they would be no match for an enraged Elk, which is very fast and strong, especially during mating season.
If it were possible, I don’t doubt some would advocate just that.
This is your future, America.
Wouldn't they just eat them?
While hunting might cause a “furor” it would be beneficial to both the ranchers and the herds.
Hunting would keep the carrying capacity of the land in balance and by charging trespass fees, the ranchers would be adequately compensated for the loss of the cattle feed.
For every elk removed, a rancher can graze two head of cattle. The trespass fee would offset the loss.
Unfortunately, the whack job kalifornians are ok with eating meat that came from the store all wrapped nice and pretty in its foam tray and cellophane as long as they can lie to themselves that no animals were killed.
This is the same area which one had the Point Reyes Oyster Farm, which had been operating since the 1930s. the National Park Service shut them down. Ranchers have no chance to win against the elk.
elk = food
harvest them
Isn’t this where the enviros are trying to shut down/have shut down that oyster farm?
Thanks.
Now that is poetic justice-these people insist their beef and dairy products be “natural” and organic when the cows that provide these organic products are not are not a native species, but native elk were killed off so the cattle could be raised without competition. Now the same bunch is whining when the “natural” animal occupants-the elk-are returned. You can’t make up irony like that...
I do eat grass fed, free range meat and dairy-but it is produced locally, by my neighbors on their property, not fed-managed land. And the deer here are native and co-exist with livestock-they are grass fed, free range and tasty, too...
I'd say elk make the best roast, but cattle a better steak.
Question:
Are all of us “Kalifornians” whack jobs or are you being
just a little bit intellectually lazy?
I would, perhaps, join you in your bleak forecast, except for the knowledge that The Lord Jesus Christ is going to Rapture His Church out of here one day soon.
Granted, all #%& is going to break loose for 7 years immediately following The Rapture. But then He returns TO Earth and sets up His 1000 year Kingdom. So as part of His Cadre, I’m very optimistc; in spite of Obunga and all his minions. In fact, I’m relishing the thought of seeing Obunga, et al receive their comeuppance!
Info please. How different are Tule Elk from the elk in our Rockies region? Anybody have a photo?
Beggin’ yer pardon, Artichoke. My bad. Should have read the SFC article first. Nice photos. I especially like the cute female in the pink top.
You are correct E. It is their agenda for sure......but they will never get myself out of or off of the mountains. No way in hell. Other folks up/near here feel exactly the same way as I do also. I can’t imagine living in anywhere near like what that picture depicts. I suppose it works for a lot of people and that is 100% okay also! Each to his own.
Different subspecies. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation lists four living subspecies -- Rocky Mountain, Roosevelt's, Tule, and Manitoban.
